Spotted Pate is among the men that Bowen Marsh leaves behind to defend Castle Black.[2] After the attack on Castle Black, Spotted Pate, Kegs, and some of the other builders argue that the debris of the burned stairs and broken ice should be left where it is, thereby creating a new obstacle for Mance Rayder. As the suggestion would mean abandoning the defense of the tunnel, Donal Noye decides against it. Pate fights in the battle beneath the Wall, where he accompanies Noye down into the tunnel.
