Steward is a title given to a person who is put into the Steward Order of the Night's Watch. The order of Stewards is the largest of the three orders of the Night's Watch. The stewards are responsible for an assortment of critical functions, providing vital day-to-day services for their brothers on the wall. They hunt and farm, tend horses, gather firewood, cook meals, make clothing, maintain weapons, and conduct trade with the south, bringing back to the Wall all of the supplies needed by the Night's Watch. Some even are tasked to help the maesters of the Night's Watch and can even act as personal assistants to the higher members of the Brotherhood. Like other members of the Watch, the stewards must be ready to fight at a moment's notice, and all have received at least basic combat training. The order of stewards have a head leader who is known as the Lord Steward, who only has the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch above him.

The stewards is one of the three orders that comprise the Night's Watch. Their main duty is to supply the Watch with food, clothing, and anything else needed for war.[1]

About

According to semi-canon sources, the order of stewards is the largest of the three orders of the Night's Watch.[2] The stewards are responsible for an assortment of critical functions, providing vital day-to-day services for their brothers on the wall. They hunt and farm, tend horses, gather firewood, cook meals, make clothing, maintain weapons, and bring the supplies needed by the Night's Watch from the south.[3][4] Personal stewards can be assigned to higher officers (e.g. Jeor Mormont[5] and Ser Mallador Locke[6][7]) for whom they might also squire,[8] or to a maester (e.g. Aemon[3]).

A senior member of the order, known as the Lord Steward, leads the stewards.[5]

Despite the fact that making war upon the wildlings is not amongst the tasks of the stewards, they are trained in arms, as the first duty of all the brothers of the Night's Watch is to defend the Wall.[1]

Known Stewards

The following members of the Night's Watch are known to belong to the order of the stewards:

Historical stewards

 • Rat Cook, a character from a horrific legend of the Night's Watch.

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Most of the four hundred men who remained at Castle Black when Lord Commander Jeor Mormont led two hundred brothers out for the Great Ranging are builders and stewards.[16]

During the Great Ranging, several members of the Night's Watch, including multiple stewards, plot several assasinations in order to be able to desert.[17] Their plans are halted when the Others attack the Fist of the First Men.[17] Later, at Craster's Keep, several of the stewards take part in the mutiny.[11]

A Feast for Crows

Clubfoot Karl, Orphan Oss and Muttering Bill, former stewards since their desertion, have remained at Craster's Keep following the mutiny, along with several other of their brothers.[7]
