The North and the location of the Stony Shore

The Stony Shore is a region along the western coast of the North.[1] It is sparsely populated with some inhabitants living in fishing villages.[2][3]

Geography

The Stony Shore is southwest of the wolfswood and Sea Dragon Point and is northwest of the Rills, from which it is separated by an as-yet-unnamed river.[4] The closest large castle may be Torrhen's Square to the east past hills and lakes.[5] The pebbles of the Stony Shore, worn smooth by the Sunset Sea, are various shades of grey.[6]

History

House Fisher ruled the Stony Shore as First Men kings after the Long Night, but they eventually submitted to the Kings of Winter and became vassals of House Stark of Winterfell.[7] It is unknown if the Fishers still live in the area or are an extinct house.

The Stony Shore was controlled by the ironborn during the reign of Harrag Hoare, King of the Iron Islands.[7]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Theon Greyjoy and eight ironborn longships are sent to harry the Stony Shore, attack the fishing villages, and sink any ships they encounter.[2] Leobald Tallhart sends Benfred Tallhart and his Wild Hares ride to drive them off, but they are ambushed and slain by Theon's men.[8]

A Storm of Swords

The ironborn hold most of the Stony Shore.[9][10]

A Feast for Crows

Most of the ironborn leave the North to attend the kingsmoot on Old Wyk following the death of Balon Greyjoy, King of the Isles and the North.

Asha Greyjoy tells Lord Rodrik Harlaw that she had to beach the Black Wind along the Stony Shore in order to find a wet nurse for Erena Glover; they found her a goat.[11] In her candidacy for Queen of the Iron Islands at the kingsmoot, Asha tries to convince the ironborn to make peace with the North and settle for the Stony Shore and Sea Dragon Point. However, they choose Euron Greyjoy's plan to expand their war instead.[6]

A Dance with Dragons

In order to resolve the siege of Moat Cailin, Ramsay Bolton offers the ironborn garrison safe conduct from Moat Cailin to the Stony Shore, where they can take ship back to the Iron Islands. However, Ramsay has them executed after they surrender.[12]

Many villagers of the Stony Shore who have fled the ironborn join King Stannis Baratheon after he retakes Deepwood Motte.[13]
