The north and the location of the Stony Shore

The Stony Shore,[1][2] also called the stony shore,[3][4] is a region along the Sunset Sea[5] on the western coast of the north.[6]

Geography

The Stony Shore is southwest of the wolfswood and Sea Dragon Point and is northwest of the Rills, from which it is separated by an as-yet-unnamed river.[5] The closest large castle may be Torrhen's Square to the east past hills and lakes.[7] The pebbles of the Stony Shore, worn smooth by the Sunset Sea, are various shades of grey.[8]

People

The thinly populated[9] Stony Shore has fishing villages.[1][10][11]

History

House Fisher ruled the Stony Shore as First Men kings after the Long Night, but they eventually submitted to the Kings of Winter and became vassals of House Stark of Winterfell.[2] It is unknown if the Fishers still live in the area or are an extinct house.

Large portions of the Stony Shore have been controlled by the ironborn at times,[12], including during the reign of Harrag Hoare, King of the Iron Islands.[2] Centuries of reaving along the stony shore has led to animosity by northmen toward the ironborn.[4]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Theon Greyjoy and eight ironborn longships are sent to attack the fishing villages of the Stony Shore and sink any ships they encounter.[1] The harrying of the Stony Shore is planned by Theon's father, Balon Greyjoy, to distract the northmen from more ambitious ironborn attacks on Deepwood Motte and Moat Cailin.[13]

Leobald Tallhart sends Benfred Tallhart and his Wild Hares from Torrhen's Square to drive off the raiders,[10] but the youths are ambushed and slain by Theon's men near a destroyed village.[13] Dissatisfied with Balon's orders, Theon gives six longships to his uncle, Aeron Greyjoy, to continue the raiding of the Stony Shore, and he gives Dagmer Cleftjaw most of the remaining men to attack Torrhen's Square. Theon plans that Dagmer's attack will draw the levies from Winterfell so that he himself can then capture the undermanned castle with only a handful of ironborn.[13]

A Storm of Swords

The ironborn hold most of the Stony Shore.[14][15]

At Hag's Mire, Robb Stark, King in the North, tasks Maege Mormont and Galbart Glover with sailing from Seagard into the Neck to find Lord Howland Reed. If they are caught by enemies, they are to claim they were sailing to Bear Island or the Stony Shore.[16]

A Feast for Crows

Aeron Damphair returns to Pyke after harrying the Stony Shore.[17]

Asha Greyjoy tells Lord Rodrik Harlaw that she had to beach her Black Wind along the Stony Shore in order to find a wet nurse for Erena Glover; they found her a goat.[18]

Most of the ironborn leave the north to attend the kingsmoot on Old Wyk following the death of Balon, King of the Isles and the North and Asha's father.[9] In her candidacy to become queen, Asha tries to convince the ironborn to make peace with the north and settle for the Stony Shore and Sea Dragon Point. However, the assembled captains choose the plan of Balon's brother, Euron Greyjoy, to expand their war instead.[8]

A Dance with Dragons

In order to resolve the siege of Moat Cailin, Ramsay Bolton offers the ironborn garrison safe conduct from Moat Cailin to the Stony Shore, where they can take ship back to the Iron Islands. However, Ramsay has them executed and flayed after they surrender.[19]

Many villagers of the Stony Shore who have fled the ironborn join King Stannis Baratheon after he defeats Asha in the fight by Deepwood Motte.[3]
