The Street of Silk is a street of King's Landing located on the Hill of Rhaenys leading up to the Dragonpit by the west.[1] The street is known for its brothels of varying expense,[2][3] including Chataya's brothel, the Blue Pearl, and Mother's.[4][5][6]

History

Early History

Rego Draz, the Pentoshi master of coin for King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, resided in his manse on the Street of Silk rather than at the Red Keep.[5]

The whores of the Street of Silk and the smallfolk of Flea Bottom started to refer to Ser Lucamore Strong as "Ser Lucamore the Lusty" once his three marriages became known to the public.[5]

Before departing King's Landing to marry old Lord Theomore Manderly in White Harbor, Princess Viserra Targaryen visited the brothels of the Street of Silk with her companions for "one last night of laughter". She died that night in a drunken horse race, however.[5]

Viserys I

Prince Daemon Targaryen was a known patron of the brothels of the Street of Silk, and he was in one of them when he referred to his short-lived nephew, Baelon Targaryen, as the "heir for a day".[7] Mushroom claims Daemon smuggled his niece, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, to go observe the sex workers.[7] Daemon's paramour, Mysaria, was known to have been a dancing girl in King's Landing,[7] so she may have worked in one of the brothels along the Street of Silk.

According to Mushroom, Prince Aegon the Elder fathered a bastard boy on a girl whose maidenhood he won at auction on the Street of Silk in 123 AC.[7]

Dance of the Dragons

After the murder of Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen amid the Dance of the Dragons, Ser Luthor Largent and his gold cloaks were sent to search after Mysaria and Cheese in the Street of Silk.[8]

According to Mushroom, Ser Hugh Hammer celebrated his knighthood by visiting the brothels of the Street of Silk. He beat to death one of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen's household knights after quarreling over the maidenhood of a woman.[9]

Amid the riots of King's Landing, Gaemon Palehair was raised up as king by whores at a brothel on the Street of Silk. Gaemon's supporters were based out of the House of Kisses atop Rhaenys's Hill.[10]

Aegon III

During the Hour of the Wolf, a brothel on the Street of Silk burned down when a quarrel began over a whore between one of Lord Elmo Tully's men and one of Lord Cregan Stark's.[11]

The former Grand Maester, Orwyle, who had escaped his imprisonment, hid and worked in a brothel of the Street of Silk named Mother's during the regency of Aegon III under the alias of "Old Wyl".[6]

According to the rumors of the Maiden's Day curse, the "three Jeynes" (Jeyne Smallwood, Jeyne Mooton and Jeyne Merryweather) visited the brothels along the Street of Silk.[12] The following year, other rumors claimed Lady Larra Rogare also visited the brothels.[13]

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

Ser Jaime Lannister commands Ser Addam Marbrand to have the gold cloaks search the Street of Silk for his brother, Tyrion Lannister, who has gone missing after the murder of their father, Lord Tywin Lannister.[2]

Ser Arys Oakheart recalls that Ser Boros Blount visits the Street of Silk despite the Kingsguard vows of chastity.[14]

According to Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, Septon Raynard is known for frequenting the brothels of the Street of Silk.[3] Brothel keepers complain that the High Sparrow is preaching against prostitution.[3]

Quotes

Look under every bed, you know how fond my brother is of brothels.[2]
