Talk: Sand Snakes
Are Obara, Nymeria and Sarella "real SANDS"?
According to the books a bastard takes the surname of the location of the mother. Obaras mother was a whore of Oldtown, wouldn't this mean that Obaras real bastard name would be "Flowers"? And Nymeria's mother was from Volantis, Sarella's from the Summer Islands. Could it be that they use the name "Sand" just because of their father, ignoring their mothers background? Identical to Jon Snow who took the bastard-name of the North, because he didn't know who his mother was? --Exodianecross 18:41, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
- It's more of a guideline than a rule, by virtue of the fact that people tend to know where a mother is living when she gives birth, compared to a nobleman father who might just be passing through. Similarly, Jon Snow certainly was not born in the North at all - Eddard brought him back up from the south, he wasn't borth in the North (whether Jon actually is his son or not doesn't matter, the point is that Catelyn and everyone else thought he was and this is an example within their culture). --The Dragon Demands 18:45, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
- A bastard is not named for the region of birth. A bastard is named, usually, for the region where he/she is raised. In addition, a bastard only receives a bastard surname when 1) at least one parent is a noble born parent, and 2) said noble parent has acknowledged, in some fashion, that the child is his. Mya Stone is named "Stone", for she was raised in the Vale, and her noble born father, Robert, acknowledged her unofficially. Gendry, despite being the bastard of King Robert, is not called Waters, because he was never acknowledged. Obara, Nymeria and Tyene were acknowledged by their noble born father, and raised in Dorne, after said acknowledgement. Thus, they are Sands.--Rhaenys_Targaryen 18:59, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Thank you! --Exodianecross 20:06, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
