The Third Dornish War also known as Lord Rogar's War was the battle against another rebel calling himself the Vulture King and his followers who pillaged the marches during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen in 61 AC.[1]

Prelude

Borys Baratheon was the original heir to Storm's End until his older brother, Rogars, son was born. Borys became bitter and travelled to Myr, and. Volantis before returning to Westeros, where he joined forces with the Vulture King of the Red Mountains and using his knowledge of the Stormlands assisted the rebel in raiding and pillaging his former home.[1]

Lord Rogar Baratheon travelled to King's Landing asking the King Jaehaerys leave in ending this treat. Jaehaerys replied that Lord Rogar not only had his leave, but the King's own sword too. [1]

Battle

The Vulture King when pursued into the Red Mountains usually just evaded capture by retreating to one of his camps high in the mountains or ambushed his pursuers, those tactic were not possible with Jaehaerys I Targaryen flying over the mountains on Vermithor. The dragon set the outlaws camps ablaze one by one, while Lord Rogar's men travelled below the mountain from the east on foot. Lord Simon Dondardarrion of Blackhaven led marcher Knights to the west of the mountains to cut off any means of escape. [1]

Ser Borys Baratheon was the first to be cornered, Lord Rogar's men made short work of his brothers men, but Jaehaerys not wanting Lord Rogar to be labelled a kinslayer personally challenged the traitor to single combat and Ser Borys was cut down with Blackfyre. [1]

The Vulture King was eventually captured at the end of the conflict, but Lord Rogar Baratheon ordered his chains removed and he was given a spear and shield. Lord Rogar commanded that if the Vulture King managed to slay him, he is to be set free. The Vulture proved unable for that task and was personally cut down by Rogar Baratheon with ease.[1]

Quotes

The fight that followed is named in the histories as the Third Dornish War, but that is a misnomer, for the Prince of Dorne kept his armies well out of the conflict. The small folk of the time called it Lord Rogar's War, and that name is far more apt.[1]
