Thoros was born in the Free City of Myr, the youngest of eight children, and he was given to a red temple of R'hllor at a young age. He earned his priesthood but was never overly pious due to his tastes for fighting, drinking and women.
Thoros was sent to King's Landing in hopes he could convert the fire-obsessed King Aerys II Targaryen, but he was unsuccessful and started to question his own faith. He was present in court when Tywin Lannister presented the corpses of Aegon and Rhaenys to Robert Baratheon, clothed in red Lannister cloaks to hide their grotesque deaths; Thoros would never forget Ser Gregor Clegane's unrestrained brutality.
After Robert's Rebellion, Thoros became a frequent drinking companion of the new king, Robert. During Greyjoy's Rebellion, he earned recognition for being the first over the wall at Pyke. He was a frequent tourney mêlée champion, using a sword set aflame with wildfire to spook the other combatants' horses. Three times he defeated Sandor Clegane in the mêlées. At the tourney on Prince Joffrey's name day, he was defeated by Lord Yohn Royce with a common mace after the fire of his sword had guttered out.
A Game of Thrones
Thoros takes part in the Hand's tourney, unhorsing Lord Beric Dondarrion. After winning the mêlée at the tourney, Thoros joins Beric Dondarrion's party charged by Eddard Stark as Hand to seek out Ser Gregor Clegane and bring him to the king's justice. He is later named among those who must swear fealty to the newly-crowned Joffrey Baratheon or be adjudged a traitor.
A Storm of Swords
Gregor Clegane ambushed their party, however, and Beric was killed. While performing a traditional burial ritual of his faith, Thoros inadvertently resurrected him while performing the last kiss. The two men founded an outlaw group, the brotherhood without banners, to protect the smallfolk from soldiers foraging in the riverlands.
As an outlaw, Thoros experiences a spiritual reawakening, and continues to be able to resurrect Beric through means beyond his understanding. After some time spent in the brotherhood, he becomes loose-skinned and grey-haired, wearing faded robes and piecemeal armor. Thoros fights with a flaming sword during the battle at the burning septry.
A Feast for Crows
Thoros does not take a leadership position in the brotherhood, and he allows Lady Stoneheart to take control of the group despite his disapproval of her motives and methods. The changes she makes in the brotherhood lower Thoros's spirits and self-confidence.
