Appearance and Character

Tomard is fat with ginger-colored whiskers. Near fifty years old,[4] he is the slowest guard of Lord Eddard Stark.[5]

Tom is affable, loyal, tireless, and capable in a limited way.[4]

History

When Mance Rayder visited Winterfell with Lord Commander Qorgyle, Robb Stark and Jon Snow dropped a mountain of snow on Tomard from a gate. Tom chased the youths around until all three were red-faced.[5]

Tom gave Arya Stark the nickname "Arya Underfoot".[1]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Tomard accompanies Lord Eddard Stark's party to the trial and execution of Gared a deserter from the Night's Watch.[6] He and Desmond drag the man to an ironwood stump, where he is beheaded by Eddard with his Valyrian steel greatsword Ice.[7]

Tomard is one of the Stark household guards who goes south with Lord Eddard to King's Landing when he is named Hand of the King by Robert I Baratheon.[1]

He and Desmond take up positions along the route Eddard will take when he goes to the armory of Tobho Mott on the Street of Steel. Their orders are to watch out for anyone following Eddard.[8]

When Yoren a Night's Watch recruiter, comes to inform Eddard at the Tower of the Hand, about Lady Catelyn Stark taking Tyrion Lannister prisoner at the inn at the crossroads, Arya Stark is commanded out of the room by her lord father. Arya wishes it was Fat Tom instead of Desmond who was escorting her to her chambers as she then might have been able to make an excuse and listen at the door.[9]

He is named captain of the Stark guards in King's Landing after the death of Jory Cassel by the Lannisters and Alyn's departure with Lord Beric Dondarrion's party to arrest Ser Gregor Clegane.[4]

When the Wind Witch is to return Sansa and Arya to the north, Ned tasks Tomard with personally delivering a letter to Lord Stannis Baratheon at Dragonstone.[10] Before the ship sets sail, however, Tom is slain by the City Watch of King's Landing in the throne room of the Red Keep when Eddard is arrested.[11]
