The Twins are the two heavily fortified castles of House Frey. They are identical and each stands on a margin of the Green Fork of the Trident. A stone bridge arches between them. This bridge is wide enough for two wagons to cross abreast and guarded by a tower in the middle known as the Water Tower.

It had taken the Freys three generations to complete the fortress, with timber keeps on either bank of the river. The timber keeps have since been replaced by stone. These castles are what give the place the name, the Twins, for they are identical. They have high curtain walls, deep moats and a barbican and portcullis in each. The bridge footings rise from within the inner keeps.[1]

The Twins have been the seat of House Frey for over six hundred years and they have grown wealthy by charging a heavy toll on all those who need to cross, as it is the only place to do so within several days travel. As the Freys are both wealthy and numerous, they are one of the most powerful houses sworn to House Tully, able to raise four thousand men-at-arms.

The seat of the Lord of House Frey is a massive chair of black oak. Its back is carved in the shape of two towers joined by an arched bridge.[2]
