Lord Tytos Lannister was lord paramount of the Westerlands and Lord of Casterly Rock. He died before the events of the books. Tyrion, Jaime and Cersei are his grandchildren by his eldest son Tywin Lannister.
History
Lord Tytos Lannister was called a kind but weak man. He loaned money to lords who never bothered to repay him and his vassals openly ignored his orders.[1]
According to his daughter Genna, he agreed to marry her to Emmon Frey, the second son of Walder Frey, just to please Lord Frey. His eldest son and his vassals spoke out against the wedding because they thought it an uneven match.[2]
At some point, Tytos imprisoned Lord Tarbeck for disloyalty. In return, Lady Tarbeck seized three Lannisters, including Stafford, whose sister was betrothed to young Tywin Lannister. Tywin suggested that Tarbeck should be send back to his wife in three pieces, one for every Lannister taken, but Tytos returned Tarbeck unharmed.[3] A few years later, the Tarbecks rebelled, again together with House Reyne. Tywin took charge of crushing the rebellion. He did this so completely that both castles were destroyed and the families extinguished.[4]
One autumn year, Tytos came between a lioness and her prey. The lioness tore into Tytos' horse and was about to attack Tytos as well, when the kennelmaster of Casterly Rock came to his rescue with his dogs, losing his leg and three dogs in the process. Out of gratitude, Tytos gave the kennelmaster lands and a towerhouse and took his son as a squire, thereby creating House Clegane.[5]
In his last few years, Tytos became fat and took a mistress, a common born woman, daughter of a candlemaker. The woman helped herself to Tytos deceased wife's jewels and clothes. She also began ordering about the household knights, dismissed servants and sat in attendance when Tytos was absent. In 267 AC, Lord Tytos died of a heart attack while climbing stairs to see her.[6]
The influence Tytos had on his son was that Tywin mistrusted laughter and that he became a hard man.[1][7]
Family
Tytos was the third son of his father but the books make no mention of the names of his siblings.[8]
