In 120, known as the Year of the Red Spring, both of Lord Corlys Velaryon's children died: his daughter Lady Laena and her younger brother Ser Laenor. Both of them had surviving children: Laena's twin daughters with Prince Daemon Targaryen, and Laenor's three sons with Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. Scandalously, half a year later Daemon and Rhaenyra remarried to each other, and there were rumors that Rhaenyra's eldest three sons were actually bastards fathered by Ser Harwin Strong (due to their appearance, possessing brown hair unlike either Rhaenyra or Laenor). It was presumed that Rhaenyra's eldest son Prince Jacaerys Velaryon would one day succeed to the Iron Throne upon the death of Rhaenyra's father King Viserys I Targaryen, thus Rhaenyra and Laenor's second son Prince Lucerys Velaryon was treated as the heir to House Velaryon and Driftmark.

In the year 126, however, Lord Corlys Velaryon was struck by a sudden fever and fell gravely ill: though he soon made a full recovery, this brought the question of succession to a head. Lord Corlys had half a dozen nephews, led by Vaemond as the eldest of them, who openly claimed that Laenor's three sons with Rhaenyra were truly bastards - and thus Vaemond should be Corlys's chosen successor.

Ser Vaemond Velaryon was a knight from House Velaryon. He had two sons, Daemion and Daeron Velaryon.[2]

History

In 126 AC when Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Lord of Driftmark, was struck by a sudden fever and fell gravely ill, a discussion began about the succession of the Driftmark. Both of Corlys's children, Laena and Laenor, had died six years before. Laena's two daughters and Laenor's three sons still lived, but regardless, Lord Corlys's eldest nephew Vaemond insisted he should be Corlys's chosen successor, claiming that Laenor's three sons were not fathered by Laenor at all, accusing their mother Rhaenyra Targaryen of committing adultery. In response, Rhaenyra dispatched her new husband, Prince Daemon, to seize Ser Vaemond. She had his head removed, and fed his carcass to her dragon, Syrax. His five younger cousins had their tongues removed afterwards by King Viserys I Targaryen for repeating the rumors about Rhaenyra's three sons by Laenor.[1][3]
