Valarr looked very much like his father, though he was smaller and thinner. He had brown hair, with a streak of silver-gold running through it. He had blue eyes.[4]
History
Prince Valarr Targaryen was born the eldest son of the Prince of Dragonstone, Baelor Targaryen, and his wife Jena Dondarrion. He had one younger brother, Matarys.[3] Valarr was married to Kiera of Tyrosh.[3] They had multiple sons, but all were stillborn.[5]
The Hedge Knight
In 209 AC, Valarr was one of the original champions for the daughter of Lord Ashford at the start of the Ashford Tourney, but his status as a Targaryen prince and grandson of the king prevented him from facing any really dangerous opponent. He won at least nine jousts, including against Ser Abelar Hightower and Lord Gawen Swann, and remained a champion after the first day's jousting.[4]
During the Trial of Seven, Valarr's father decided to take part as the seventh champion on the side of Dunk. However, as Prince Baelor had not expected to fight, he had not brought any armor to Ashford with him. Thus, he borrowed Valarr's armor, causing Dunk to shortly believe Valarr was about to champion him.[4]
Valarr's father dies in the trial, and Valarr stands vigil by his body. When Dunk tries to offer his sympathies, Valarr dismisses him.
My father was only nine-and-thirty. He had it in him to be a great king, the greatest since Aegon the Dragon. Why would the gods take him, and leave you? Begone with you, Ser Duncan. Begone.[4]
Valarr dies later in the year during the Great Spring Sickness, mere hours before his grandfather, King Daeron II Targaryen.[6]
The Sworn Sword
In 211 AC, Valarr appeared to Ser Duncan the Tall in a dream, telling him that his father, Prince Baelor, would have been the best king since Aegon the Dragon.[6]
The Mystery Knight
Later that year, Dunk and Egg heard a septon in Stoney Sept preach about how Hand of the King Brynden Rivers had killed Prince Valarr's sons in their mother's womb. The septon even suggested that Bloodraven was responsible for Valarr's death. When Dunk and Egg left the town, they noticed a head on a spike on the walls; it was the septon, beheaded for speaking treason.[5]
