A Feast for Crows

Tales start to reach Westeros of Dragons.[6]

A Dance with Dragons

While in Meereen, Viserion and the other dragons misbehave and start to grow wild. Viserion sets Reznak mo Reznak's tokar on fire.[7]

As Dany walks out onto the terrace of the Great Pyramid Viserion senses Dany’s disquiet, she is concerned about the Sons of the Harpy. She finds him lying coiled around a pear tree, with his head resting on his tail.[7]

As Dany passes his eyes open, two pools of molten gold. His horns are gold as well, and the scales that run down on his back from head to tail. Dany scratches him under the jaw and tells him he is lazy. His scales are hot to the touch, like armor left too long in the sun. She recalls that dragons are fire made flesh and that she had read that in one of the books Ser Jorah had given her as a wedding present. She wonders out loud why Viserion is not hunting with his brothers and if he and Drogon had been fighting again. She thinks to herself:

I have left them too much to themselves, but where am I to find the time for them? [7]

He lashes his tail sideways and a pear comes tumbling down to land at Dany’s feet. He unfolds his wings and he half flies, half hops onto a parapet. He grows Dany thinks to herself and he launches himself into the sky. Dany notices that all three are growing and that soon they will be large enough to bear her weight. She thinks that then she will fly as Aegon the Conqueror had flown, up and up, until Meereen is so small that she could blot it out with her thumb. Dany watches Viserion climb in widening circles until he is lost to her sight beyond the muddy waters of the Skahazadhan

When Drogon kills a young girl outside Meereen, Daenerys has Viserion and Rhaegal confined and chained in the Great Pyramid in a makeshift "dragon pit" beneath the city.[8]

Daenerys leads Viserion down to the pit herself and shuts him up inside with several oxen. He was the first dragon chained up. Once he had gorged himself he grew drowsy and they had chained him while he slept.

Later Daenerys is escorted by Ser Barristan down to the Great Pyramid’s pit to visit the dragons. As the door is opened she steps into the hot heart of darkness. Forty feet below her the dragons raise their heads. Four eyes burn through the shadows – two of molten gold and two of bronze. Viserion unfolds his wings, stirring the stale air and he tries to fly to her, but the chains snap taunt as he rises and slam him down on his belly. Links as big as a man’s fist bind his feet to the floor. The iron collar about his neck is fastened to the wall behind him. Dany sees that they have both grown larger.

Viserion’s claws scrabble against the stones and the huge chains rattle as he tried to make his way to her again. When he cannot he gives a roar, twisted his head as far back as his is able and spits golden flame at the wall behind him. Dany thinks that not long ago he had ridden on her shoulder, with his tail coiled around her shoulder and she had fed him morsels of charred meat from her hand.

Later on, when Dany is talking with Daario, she thinks to herself that Viserion has snapped one of his chains and he and Rhaegal are growing more savage every day.

When Dany takes Prince Quentyn Martell to see her dragons one of them roars knowing she is near. By this time Viserion has shattered one chain and melted the others. He clings to the roof of the pit like some huge white bat, his claws dig deep into the burnt and crumbling bricks. Viserion roars at them and his flame is gold and orange. When he flaps his wings a cloud of grey ash fills the air. Broken chains clank and clatter about his legs. Viserion hisses and smoke rises between his teeth, and deep down in his throat Dany and Quentyn can see gold fire churning. As she leads Prince Quentyn back to the door Daenerys can hear the dragons screaming and see the play of light against the bricks, reflections of their fires.

After Dany disappears on Drogon's back Prince Quentyn attempts to steal a dragon after enlisting the help of the Windblown. Upon entering the pit they are at first unable to see Viserion. Quentyn then remembers that during his visit with Daenerys Viserion was clinging to the ceiling.

He raises his torch and he sees something pale, half hidden, stirring. Quentyn realizes that Viserion is in the process of making a cave, a burrow in the brick, digging himself a hole in the foundations with flame and claw, a hole big enough to sleep in. He also realizes that they have just woken him up, and he can see what looks like some huge white serpent uncoiling inside the wall, up where it curves to become a ceiling. The serpent resolves itself into a neck and tail and then the dragon’s long horned head appears, his eyes glowing in the dark like golden coals. His wings rattle, stretching.

Viserion then launches himself from the ceiling, his pale wings unfolding, spreading wide. The broken chain dangling from his neck swings wildly. His flame lights the pit, pale gold shot through with red and orange, and the stale air explodes in a cloud of hot ash and sulfur as the white wings beat and beat again.

He comes down between the Dornishmen and the door with a roar that would send a hundred lions running. His head moves from side to side as he inspects the intruders. He stares last and longest at Pretty Meris, sniffing. Quentyn realizes that he knows she is female, and that he is looking for Daenerys. He wants his mother and does not understand why she is not there. Quentyn calls Viserion but he quickly loses interest. He turns back toward the Windblown and lurches towards the door. The Windblown begin to panic and are not quick enough to get out of his way. Viserion lets out another roar and a Brazen Beast looses a crossbow, the quarrel hits Viserion and caroms off his neck to vanish in the gloom. A line of fire gleams in its wake – dragon’s blood, glowing gold and red.

The Viserion closes his teeth around the crossbowman and kills him. The Windblown pull back and Quentyn again calls Viserion and he uncoils his whip and lashes him across the face attempting to dominate him. Unbeknownst to Quentyn, Rhaegal is behind him. The green dragon looses his fire and fatally burns Quentyn.

In the aftermath the iron doors are left open the two dragons escape. Sometime thereafter, while on the terrace of the Great Pyramid, Ser Barristan espies pale wings moving above a distant line of hills, far off to the east, beyond the city walls. Viserion, he thinks to himself, hunting mayhaps, or flying just to fly.
