Viserys I was the King of the Seven Kingdoms and head of House Targaryen. He ruled from 103 AC to 129 AC. He succeeded his grandfather, Jaehaerys I.
Appearance
According to a semi-canon source, Viserys was plump and pleasant. He sported a bushy, silver-gold mustache and wore the crown of his grandfather, Jaehaerys I.[1]
History
King Viserys I ruled well, and continued the prosperous peace left to him by his grandfather Jaehaerys I. In his court he had the dwarf jester Mushroom. He had three children by his first wife, who was a member of House Arryn. Two were sons who died in infancy and one was a daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, who lived until adulthood.[2] Lacking a son to succeed him, Viserys began to groom Princess Rhaenyra to be the ruling queen. He taught her how to rule and made her part of his small council. Later in life he married again, to Alicent Hightower, and had several sons with her.[3] Rhaenyra remained his heir, however, a decision he left in his will. Rhaenyra's first consort, Lord Lyonel Strong once served him as Hand of the King.
After Viserys' death, the eldest son of his second wife, Aegon II, was crowned by the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Criston Cole and Queen Alicent. This led to a war between Rhaenyra and Aegon II, better known as the Dance of the Dragons.
