Viserys I was the fifth Targaryen king of the Seven Kingdoms.[1] He ruled from 103 AC to 129 AC. He succeeded his grandfather, Jaehaerys I. His reign was considered peaceful and prosperous.[2] He rode the dragon Balerion, until the dragon died of old age during the reign of Old King Jaehaerys[3]
Appearance
Viserys was plump and pleasant. In his midlife his stoutness caused him numerous health problems: he suffered from gout, aching joints, back pain, and respiratory issues.[2]
He sported a bushy, silver-gold mustache and wore the crown of his grandfather, Jaehaerys I.[4]
History
Prince Baelon, chosen by King Jaehaerys I as his heir in 92 AC,[5] died before the Old King, leading to questions about the succession. Viserys was eventually chosen by the Great Council convened in 101 AC. King Viserys I ruled well, and continued the prosperous peace left to him by his grandfather, Jaehaerys I. In his court he had the dwarf jester Mushroom. He had three children by his first wife Aemma, who was a member of House Arryn. Two were sons who died in infancy and one was a daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, who lived until adulthood.[6] Lacking a son to succeed him, Viserys began to groom Princess Rhaenyra to be the ruling queen. His Hand, Lord Hightower encouraged this plan to avoid the reign of Prince Daemon, the king's brother.[2] He taught her how to rule and made her part of his small council. In 105AL, hundreds of lords and landed knights had done obeisance to the princess and sworn solemn oaths to defend her rights.[5]
In 106AL, Viserys married again after the death of his first wife, to Alicent Hightower, and had several sons and a daughter, Helaena Targaryen with her.[6] Lord Hightower attempted to convince the king to change the succession, but in the end, Viserys removed Lord Hightower as Hand, bestowing the honor on Lord Lyonel Strong.[2] Rhaenyra remained his heir, however, a decision he left in his will.
Viserys hated conflict and made repeated attempts to cease the hostilities between the greens and the blacks. His attempts met with much resistance, with many fights and false apologies on both sides issued. He loved his wife and daughter, but they only loved each other when he commanded.[2]
Viserys was aware of the rumors that Rhaenyra's sons were fathered by Harwin Strong and not her husband Laenor Velaryon, but commanded that anyone heard spreading the rumor would lose their tongue. Several members of House Velaryon did when Rhaenyra argued her second oldest son should inherit Driftmark. After issuing the order to remove their tongues, Viserys slipped and cut his hand to the bone on the Iron Throne. He suffered a fever from an infection and only recovered after two of his fingers were removed. He never sat on the throne again.[2]
Viserys died on the third day of third moon of 129 AC during a nap in the Red Keep of King's Landing.[5] After Viserys' death, the eldest son of his second wife, Aegon, was crowned Aegon II by the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Criston Cole, and his widow, Queen Alicent. This led to a war between Rhaenyra and Aegon II, better known as the Dance of the Dragons.
