The Vulture King was a Dornish outlaw who gathered thousands of followers to rise against King Aenys I Targaryen in the Second Dornish War. His given name is unknown.

History

After the passing of King Aegon I Targaryen in 37 AC, the Vulture King raised an army in the Red Mountains against his son, King Aenys I Targaryen. The Dornishmen sought vengeance for House Targaryen's attacks during the First Dornish War. Deria Martell, Princess of Dorne, denounced the insurrection, but she did nothing to stop this Second Dornish War.[1]

After burning Blackhaven and slicing off the nose of Lord Harmon Dondarrion, the Vulture King divided his host in two. Lord Walter Wyl led one army to Stonehelm, but he was defeated and captured by Orys Baratheon, Lord Paramount of the Stormlands. The Vulture King led the other host toward Nightsong and Horn Hill, but the outlaw was unable to capture Nightsong. Lord Dondarrion, Lady Caron, and Lord Samwell Tarly defeated the Vulture King's army in a bloody battle.[1] The marcher lords pursued the rebels during the "Vulture Hunt".[2]

Savage Sam executed the captured Vulture King by tying him naked between two posts and leaving him to die from exposure. The singers like to say the Vulture King was torn apart and consumed by the same vultures from which he took his name, though in truth, he died from thirst after a few days with no water, and the vultures feasted on his corpse long after he was dead.[1]

In later generations, several other leaders of rebels and outlaw bands that arose in the Red Mountains called themselves "Vulture Kings", after the first. None of these later Vulture Kings were as powerful as the first, however, nor could anyone say if they were actually related to him by blood.[1]

Quotes

This Vulture King is half-mad, and his followers are a rabble, undisciplined and unwashed. We can smell them coming fifty leagues away.[1]
