Ser Walder Rivers is a natural son of Lord Walder Frey, and is often called Bastard Walder. Walder's personal coat of arms is a silver-grey castle on blue (the colors of House Frey reversed) beneath a red bend sinister.
He is the eldest of Lord Walder's bastard children. He is gruff, dour, and has grey hair. Though not a trueborn Frey, he is often put in positions of responsibility for House Frey due to his strong reputation as a warrior. His mother fell from a horse and died.
A Storm of Swords
Walder commands the escort of Lothar Frey on his trip south to Riverrun where Lothar is to treat with Robb Stark. Walder accompanies Lothar Frey on his meeting with Robb outside the gates of the Twins, but is much less friendly than his half-brother. During the Red Wedding, he commands the attack on the soldiers' camp.
A Feast for Crows
Walder is present at the Second Siege of Riverrun, where he participates in the heated stalemate that plagues the besieging army's command. Jaime Lannister thinks that Walder Rivers is more dangerous than any of his trueborn brothers.
That whoreson. Hates that he is a bastard, and hates everyone who's not.
- Ser Daven Lannister
That one is more dangerous than any of his trueborn brothers.
– Jaime's thoughts on Bastard Walder
