A wizard is a man said to have strange powers through magic.[1][2] A hedge wizard is a healer and merchant who claims some knowledge of magic.

Culture

Wizards are viewed skeptically by some Westerosi.[1]

In the stories of Old Nan, wizards are associated with long white beards, and tall pointed hats speckled with stars.[1]

Images of wizards are on some of the coins draped around the neck of Vargo Hoat.[3]

Wizards study in Asshai, where no knowledge is forbidden.[4]

History

Greenseers are sometimes called the wizards of the children of the forest.[5]

Wizards were active in the Golden Empire of Yi Ti.[6]

Valyrian wizards are said to have shaped stone with fire and magic.[7] Rhoynish water wizards fought against the dragonlords during the Rhoynish Wars.[8]

Wizards, alchemists, and sorcerers were among the wise men and scholars gathered by Peremore Hightower.[9]

In tales of Ser Clarence Crabb, the knight brought the heads of wizards to the Whispers.[10]

When Renly Baratheon was a child, he used to pretend to be a wizard.[11]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

In a secret passage near the cellar of the skulls of the Targaryen dragons, Arya Stark overhears a conversation between two unknown men — actually Varys and Illyrio Mopatis — in which Illyrio jokingly calls Varys a wizard. When she tries to tell her father, Eddard Stark, about the conversation, which also mentioned his potential death, she mentions the "monsters" and how one man called the other a wizard, and Eddard dismisses the story as mummery. Arya later asks Desmond, one of her father's household guards, if he could protect her father from a wizard, and Desmond replies that wizards die the same as other men.[1]

A Clash of Kings

Arya Stark wonders if Jaqen H'ghar could be a wizard, and if so, then Rorge and Biter could be demons that he conjured up from some hell.[12]

While in the House of the Undying, Daenerys Targaryen has a vision of a splendor of sumptuously-dressed wizards in a hall. They wear robes of ermine, ruby velvet, and cloth of gold, or elaborate armor studded with gemstones, or tall pointed hats speckled with stars.[13]

A Storm of Swords

The cook at the Inn of the Kneeling Man refers to Thoros of Myr as "the red wizard".[2]

Greenbeard also calls Thoros a wizard, and Arya thinks he does not look much like the ones in Old Nan's stories.[14]

When Samwell Tarly manages to get Jon Snow elected as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, Pyp calls Sam a wizard.[15]

A Feast for Crows

Ironborn refers to the warlocks in the company of Euron Greyjoy as wizards.[16][17] Euron tells his brother, Victarion Greyjoy, that he slew a Myrish wizard who was unable to hatch a dragon egg for him.[17]

A Dance with Dragons

Coldhands says that the three-eyed crow could be called a wizard.[18]

Ironborn in the Iron Fleet consider Moqorro to be a wizard.[19]

Quotes

Illyrio: Too soon, too soon. What good is war now? We are not ready. Delay.

Varys: As well bid me stop time. Do you take me for a wizard?

Illyrio: No less.[1]

Arya: What if a wizard was sent to kill him?
Desmond: Well, as to that, wizards die the same as other men, once you cut their heads off.[1]

Brienne: You are the Myrish priest. The red wizard.
Thoros: The pink pretender, rather. I am Thoros, late of Myr, aye... a bad priest and a worse wizard.[20]

Meera Reed: Who sent you? Who is this three-eyed crow?
Coldhands: A friend. Dreamer, wizard, call him what you will. The last greenseer.[18]

Victarion: Why do you say this man is a wizard? I see only a ragged red priest.
Rodrik: I thought the same, lord Captain ... but he knows things.[19]

The Crow's Eye keeps wizards, why shouldn't I? His black sorcerer was more puissant than all of Euron's three, even if you threw them in a pot and boiled them down to one.[21]
