Ser Wynton Stout is a ranger of the Night's Watch. He is old and has lost his wits.[1][2]
History
Thirty years before the War of the Five Kings, Ser Wynton came within a dozen votes of being named Lord Commander.[3] He has been a ranger in the Night's Watch for eighty years.[4] His mental state has significantly deteriorated within the last ten years.[3]
Recent Events
A Storm of Swords
Ser Wynton was among those left behind at Castle Black when Lord Commander Jeor Mormont went beyond the Wall in search of Benjen Stark and Mance Rayder.[1] As the last knight in the castle, he was made castellan of Castle Black by Lord Steward Bowen Marsh when Marsh went off to investigate reports of wildling incursions. Stout seemed to have forgotten his appointment, however, and it was the smith Donal Noye and later Jon Snow who took de facto command of the defense against Mance's assault.[2][3]
