Ser Wynton Stout is a knight from House Stout and a ranger of the Night's Watch. He is old and has lost his wits.[2][3]

History

Thirty years before the War of the Five Kings, Ser Wynton came within a dozen votes of being named Lord Commander.[4] He has been a ranger in the Night's Watch for nearly eighty years.[5] His mental state has significantly deteriorated within the last ten years.[4]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Ser Wynton is among those left behind at Castle Black when Lord Commander Jeor Mormont goes beyond the Wall in search of Benjen Stark and Mance Rayder.[2] As the last knight in the castle, he is made castellan of Castle Black by Lord Steward Bowen Marsh when Bowen leaves to investigate reports of wildling incursions. Wynton seems to have forgotten his appointment, however, and it is the smith Donal Noye and later Jon Snow who command the defense against Mance's assault.[3][4]
