Yurkhaz zo Yunzak is the commander of the Yunkai army at Meereen.[1] He is a vain old man who is carried upon a palanquin by over forty slaves.

About

Tyrion thinks Yurkhaz looks like a human prune, and that he looks about as formidable as a loose stool.[1]

During the feast held in the Great Pyramid to celebrate her wedding Dany thinks to herself that her guest the Yunkish Supreme Commander might have been alive during Aegon's Conquest, to judge by his appearance. Bent-backed. Wrinkled, and toothless, he is carried to the table by two strapping slaves.

Yurkhaz owns a group of Yunkish castrati slaves who sing songs in the ancient tongues of the Old Empire, their voices are high and sweet and impossibly pure. He is the man who hired the Windblown, he signed their contract on behalf of the city of Yunkai. [2]

A Dance with Dragons

Yurkhaz zo Yunzak's army besieged Astapor but was nearly defeated if not for the sellsword legions hired by the Yunkai. His leadership skills (along with the rest of the Wise Masters) were highly dubious and questioned by many of the sellsword captains such as the Tattered Prince.

When Yezzan zo Qaggaz hosted the Yunkish supreme commander, a dozen other Yunkish lords attended to him. An enslaved Tyrion and Penny capered then served and poured. During Penny and Tyrion’s antics the guests waited to see how Yurkhaz zo Yunzak responded before joining in. Yurkhaz appears so frail that Tyrion is afraid laughing might kill him.

When Penny’s helm gets struck off and flies into the lap of a sour-faced Yunkishman in a striped green-and-gold tokar Yurkhaz cackled like a chicken. When the said lord reached inside the helm and drew out a large purple melon dribbling with pulp, Yurkhaz wheezed until his face turned the same colour as the fruit. He then turned to his host and whispered something that made Yezzan chortle and lick his lips … though Tyrion thinks there is a hint of anger in his master’s slitted yellow eyes.

Once Yurkhaz departed Nurse told Tyrion that Yurkhaz persuaded Yezzan that it would be selfish to keep such droll antics to himself and that his dwarves should have the honour of jousting in the Great Pit of Daznak to celebrate the singing of the peace,

During the feast held in the Great Pyramid to celebrate her wedding Dany sees Hizdahr zo Loraq laughing with Yurkhaz and the other Yunkish lords.

When peace was made between Meereen and Yunkai, several Yunkai commanders went into the city to sign the treaty and to see the spectacle in the newly reopened Daznak's Pit, Yurkhaz among them.[3]. Yurkhaz perishes in Daznak’s Pit. The crowd went into a panic at the appearance of Drogon and he dies by happenstance on the steps as he tried to flee Drogon. He was crushed beneath the feet of his own fleeing slaves and companions. That or his heart burst in terror. [4] In the Purple Lotus the Tattered Prince tells Quentyn Martell he saw Yurkhaz die, that:

The poor man saw the dragon and stumbled as he tried to flee. Then a thousand of his closest friends stepped on him. [2]

The Yunkai try to use his death to their advantage, saying it is as a breach of the peace, that blood must pay for blood, a life for a life. According to the Shavepate they use his death to give Hizdahr a pretext to kill Daenerys’s dragons. [5]
