House Template Navboxes

Hi! The choice to do two templates within one was a discussion held on the forum's official wiki thread, starting here. I believe it was for reasons of default open/closing of the navboxes, although that particular wiki feature seems to be broken since the last wiki upgrade (which is also being discussed on the forum wiki thread). You could bring up the issue on the forum if you can figure a workaround, maybe? --Mindset (talk) 14:44, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for pointing me to the discussion. Although when I tested it, using one navbox with two subgroups worked just fine, with one subgroup open and the other collapsed. Abjiklam (talk) 15:03, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Looking great! Thanks for your hard work. :) --Mindset (talk) 18:37, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

I second this! :) But, redirecting the "Start" and "Finish" templates to the main templates causes the pages which did not use the main template (e.g. who did not use {{HousesNorth}}, but used the separate {{HousesNorthStart}} and {{HousesNorthFinish}} instead) to display the new tepmlate you've created twice (for example, House Manderly. This only seems to be the case for the North, currently, as Dorne and the Crownlands used the main template (i.e. {{HousesDorne}}) instead of the "Start" and "Finish" templates.
So, I think that redirecting the "Start" and "Finish" templates is not necessary. If they contain no data and are not used on any page, they can be deleted. For the northern houses that contain the "Start" and "Finish" templates (linked here), I'd suggest we change the {{HousesNorthStart}} and {{HousesNorthFinish}} to {{HousesNorth}} (which now contains all the info necessary), so we can delete these separate "Start" and "Finish" templates, too. --Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 20:23, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Sigil corrections

White background

Hello. You've been adding a lot of sigil images over the past few days/weeks! I was wondering something, and I thought I could perhaps ask you. Would it be possible to remove the white background from these sigils? Like this sigil has, for example? This would give a better display in coloured backgrounds, like the infoboxes the sigils are placed in on House pages (though the grey colour in those boxes is rather light), or, for example, on pages like this.--Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 20:42, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi. Yes, it's bothering me too. I didn't put these backgrounds explicitly, but I guess the problem is with whatever software the server is using to display SVG files. Frankly I'm not sure how to fix the problem, but I'm hoping it'll get done eventually because there is no such problem on Wikipedia. Abjiklam (talk) 21:21, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
I did a little bit of digging. This page should probably provide a solution. I think if this wiki uses librsvg it will fix the problem. Abjiklam (talk) 21:30, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
I would suggest contacting User:Ran on the Westeros.org forum for this. I suppose the asoiaf wiki-thread would be a good place. If I might ask, what is the reason for chosing the use of .svg files over .png or .jpg files? --Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 21:46, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the link. I'll ask what can be done. SVG is a better format for non-photographic images, especially images with clear geometrical shapes. It's completely scalable, which means we use a single file to make an image look as good 10 pixels wide as 1000 pixels wide. For simple images it also needs a lot less memory space. This image explains what it looks like. In general SVG images look much crisper. Abjiklam (talk) 22:08, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for explaining, and for providing an example :). --Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 10:01, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Hey. Arek here. Love the new sigils you added.

I have the software to remove the white background from the sigils you added. Is it ok if I do so & replace the sigils you added without the white background. I changed the Blood raven one to show I could do it. Is it ok if I do it with the others you added?

Hi Arek. If you don't mind, I'd like first to ask the admins if they can somehow change how .svg's are rendered on the site. If they can't/won't fix it, I don't mind if you upload .png versions of the files :) Abjiklam (talk) 08:27, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

Np Abjiklam. Let me know. Won't change any of the other files unless I have the go ahead from you.

Hey Abjiklam. Arek here again. If you want you could email me all the .svg files you have. I could convert them to png and email them back to you so you can upload the sigils without the white background. If you want to do that let me know & ill give you my email address. Regards Arek

Sent you a message. Abjiklam (talk) 00:34, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

The newer svgs no longer have the background, while the older ones still do, if displayed in resolutions prior to the update (such as 50px). It's been days now, and this has not yet changed. I suggest reuploading the svgs, which will update the displayed images sans background (I've tried it once with Jon Stark). If you don't have the time, I could reupload all the older svgs. If we wait longer, more of the png conversions will be uploaded, which somehow defeats the purpose of these svgs. Lord Evermore (talk) 10:02, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

Good idea, I've started doing it. If you'd like the help maybe you can start from the bottom of Category:SVG coat of arms and work your way up. Meanwhile I'll continue going alphabetically and we'll meet somewhere in the middle. Abjiklam (talk) 17:26, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

Jon Snow

Hello. On the tinctures of House_Stark_(Jon_Snow).svg - it was said to be reversed Stark colors, so it should be white direwolf on grey field. Lord Evermore (talk) 02:33, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

Faceless Men

Great work on the Faceless Men, but I think the colors should be reversed. According to the description, The left door is weirwood, the right ebony. In the center of the doors is a carved moon face ebony on weirwood, weirwood on ebony. Lord Evermore (talk) 15:25, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

House Arryn

Love your work - the svgs look so nice and crisp. I did notice that the falcon of Arryn is not quite right. It should be soaring. It looks, now, like its coming in to land/grab some poor little creature. Can this be fixed easily? Eagle of Seagard (talk) 00:29, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Done! Abjiklam (talk) 02:28, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
I love the soaring falcon, but is there any way to make it smaller so that the wingspread is entirely silhouetted within the moon? It's pretty like you have it, but doesn't quite match GRRM's description. --Mindset (talk) 22:24, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
Done. It's also soaring completely upwards, per the description. Abjiklam (talk) 15:39, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Rainbow guard shield

Re your recent update to File:Rainbow Guard.svg -- it looks very pretty, but the Rainbow Guards' cloaks are striped like a rainbow, so I shouldn't think their shield would be a color wheel? --Mindset (talk) 19:49, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

Actually, come to think of it, the Rainbow Guard use their own personal sigils on their shields and only their cloak is rainbow-striped, so perhaps it shouldn't be a shield-shape for the COA, but a banner-shape (like some of the sellsword companies) or a cloak shape? If that's possible? --Mindset (talk) 21:52, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Hi thanks for the explanation. My idea was to evoke a seven-pointed stars using the rainbow but you're right. Not sure what would be more appropriate between a shield or a banner. Abjiklam (talk) 14:09, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

House Massey

Hi, the House Massey SVG looks great -- especially in the small version, which doesn't turn the spirals into pixelated mush -- but traditionally the triple spiral is done with green on top and red and blue below? See the neolithic spirals here, as well as the Citadel heraldry and the depiction on the endpapers of TWOIAF and elsewhere. Thank you so much for your hard work! --Mindset (talk) 22:24, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

House Bracken

Thanks so much for the Arryn and Massey fixes, they look wonderful. I think I'd switch back to using a horse rather than a de-horned unicorn for Bracken, though -- the proportions are weird, and it has cloven hooves and a lion's tail. --Mindset (talk) 16:53, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Oh right, I didn't realize the horn isn't the only difference. I'll redo it with a proper horse. Abjiklam (talk) 17:00, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Sigil requests

Hi, I'm not sure what your priority is for these sigils, but any chance you could get to Caron soon? I noticed that File:32x32 Caron.png is incorrect -- using a round Dornish shield for some reason, even though Caron is a Stormlands house -- and while it would be easy to replace it with a resized version of the existing Caron sigil, I like your svgs. :) --Mindset (talk) 02:28, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Looks like Lord Evermore fixed it, but I expect I'll get to it someday! Abjiklam (talk) 12:49, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

The sigil of House Waxley also needs an update. :) A Feast for Crows mentions six candles on the Waxley sigil, not three.--Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 16:42, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks! --Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 17:43, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Hey! I noticed several sigils missing amongst the svgs. Could those perhaps be added? I couldn't find any svg COA for House Umber, Gargalen, Toland, Wyl, Baelish (the original sigil held by Petyr's father), Wydman, Bulwer, Borrell, Follard, Horpe, Peasebury and Meadows. --Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 19:30, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

Others which are still missing are House Gargalen, Toland, and Wyl from Dorne. --Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 10:30, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
House Toland is done... albeit somewhat late... Abjiklam (talk) 00:40, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

the replacement of sigils

Why did you replace that many sigils? most of yours look really good. but the baratheon stag has its crown on the neck, which is a show thing and shouldn't be in here, and the lannister lion is supposed to look proud which your one does not really imo, in both cases the original was better. Euron Lannister (talk) 19:33, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

The crown on the neck is not specific to the show. In heraldry many animals have been depicted with crowns around the neck, notably unicorns and sometimes lions and deer. As for the lion of Lannister, I simply think this one looks better. In particular, the limbs are more nicely placed. Abjiklam (talk) 13:37, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Chapters list

Hi. I'm not sure what you've changed in the lists on the Chapters page, but at least on mobile something is wrong. For AGOT, ACOK, and ASOS, I see only columns of numbers, and only text (mostly out of page range) in the last row (link). For AFFC and ADWD I see the beginnings of the text, but it is not entirely visible (link). Could you explain what the advantages of the change are, and tell me whether or not there is a way to fix the current issues?--Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 14:01, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi Rhaenys, I also noticed the lists don't look good on mobile, but for me that was already the case before I changed anything. Could you check if the previous revision looked ok to you?
The only thing I changed to the list is bringing the 0th element into the actual HTML list (<ol>). If you look at previous versions, you might notice the 0th elements were not in the same HTML list as the following elements.
In any case, the issue was that Template:Columns was not designed for responsiveness, but I think I've now added what was missing to make it look good on mobile. Abjiklam (talk) 22:01, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
The linked version looks the same as my screenshots do, although in the past that page displayed just fine for me, so perhaps it is associated with the forum update? In any case, the readability of the lists is good now, so thank you for the fix (and the explanation of the issue!)!
A somewhat related question, since you seem to be very knowledgeable about the coding for templates. Since the forum update the infoboxes have issues with the image sizes. Usually it is only part of the image missing, but I encountered an extreme example today and figured it is time to try and solve the issue. On the Targaryen campaign in Slavers Bay page, the Infobox has such trouble that on mobile I cannot read quite a big part of the text (Link). I suspect the images are the problem here, but making them smaller would make them too small on desktop. Do you know of a way to have the size adjust automatically to the screen size of the mobile device being used?--Rhaenys Targaryen (talk) 21:25, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
