Archons are officials in the Valyrian Freehold and a successor state, the Free City of Tyrosh. They sometimes post Unsullied at their gates.[1] Archons in Tyrosh are not elected for life, but serve terms that run out after some time.[2]


Archons were provisionally elected by their lords freeholder of Valyria.[3] Often dragonriders, archons oversaw colonial cities and towns of the Valyrian Freehold,[4] with the exceptions of the self-ruling Free Cities.[5] The ruler of Tyrosh after the Doom of Valyria calls himself archon.

During the reign of King Aegon III Targaryen, the Archon's sister was presented to King Aegon III Targaryen at the ball known as the Maiden's Day Cattle Show.[6]

During the reign of King Aegon IV Targaryen, Aegon and the Archon of Tyrosh arranged the marriage of Daemon Blackfyre and Rohanne of Tyrosh. The marriage was carried out by Aegon's successor, King Daeron II Targaryen, and the archon, early in 184 AC.[7]

More recently, the green-haired daughter of the Archon of Tyrosh was sent to Dorne as a child and used to play in the Water Gardens with Princess Arianne Martell.[8]

A Game of Thrones

The green-bearded brother of the Archon of Tyrosh attends the introduction of Daenerys Targaryen to her future husband Khal Drogo at Drogo’s nine-towered manse in Pentos.[9]

A Feast for Crows

It is rumored that the Archon of Tyrosh has offered terms to Lys to end the trade war.[10]

Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne, reveals to his daughter, Princess Arianne, that at one point she was to have been sent to Tyrosh to serve as the Archon's cupbearer, so she could have met her betrothed, Viserys Targaryen, in secret.[8]
