The Great Lagoon[1] is a lagoon northwestern Essos. The Free City of Braavos sprawls across a hundred islands within the lagoon, which is considered a bountiful fishing spot.[2]

Lay out

Braavos is comprised of a hundred islands within the lagoon linked together by small stone bridges spanning the many canals throughout the city.[2] To enter the Great Lagoon, one must pass beneath the Titan of Braavos, a stone fortress in the shape of a huge warrior.[3][4]

The Green Canal leads from the Palace of Truth to the east side of the lagoon,[5] while the Long Canal, the broadest of the major waterways, leads from the center of the city to the south of the lagoon, where a fishmarket is located.[5] The water from the lagoon is brackish and briny, and the canal water is not drinkable without first boiling it.[4]

The Drowned Town, the eldest part of the city,[2] has fallen into the lagoon, so only the domes and towers of the old buildings are visible above the surface of the water.[6]

History

Much of the city's early wealth came from the brackish waters of the lagoon, which yielded oysters, eels, crabs, crawfish, clams, rays, and many sorts of fish.[2]
