A Dance with Dragons
After imprisoning Ser Davos Seaworth in the presence of the Freys, Lord Wyman Manderly has a lookalike prisoner executed via beheading and has the fingers of one of his hands cut off to resemble Davos. The head and hands are then put up on spikes upon the Seal Gate to give the Lannisters and Freys reason to believe in House Manderly's loyalty to the Iron Throne.[2]
Quotes
Davos: You took a great risk, my lord. If the Freys had seen through your deception...
Wyman: I took no risk at all. If any of the Freys had taken it upon themselves to climb my gate for a close look at the man with the onion in his mouth, I would have blamed my gaolers for the error and produced you to appease them.[2]
