Tal Toraq is a former slave, originally of the Summer Isles, who was freed by Daenerys Targaryen.

Tal is black-skinned.[1]

Tal Toraq is freed by Daenerys Targaryen during her efforts to end slavery in Slaver's Bay.
A Dance with Dragons
Tal Toraq joins a company of fighting freedmen, the Stalwart Shields, when it is formed by Queen Daenerys in Meereen.[2]
The Stalwart Shields' commander, Mollono Yos Dob, dies from the pale mare epidemic, and Tal Toraq is named their new commander.[1] He is present at the council when Ser Barristan Selmy prepares for war the Yunkai, who are besieging Meereen. Tal Toraq suggests breaking through the enemy ranks and sending a force to besiege the city of Yunkai itself, currently undefended, thereby forcing the besieging forces to leave to defend their own city.[1]

The Winds of Winter
Ser Barristan resolves to deal with the Yunkish threat by riding out and meeting the enemy on the field, and assigns the various forces of Meereen to different roles. Tal Toraq and his Stalwart Shields gather by the eastern gate of Meereen.[3]
