Editing A Storm of Swords-Chapter 2 (section)

==Synopsis==    
Ser [[Desmond Grell]], [[castellan]] of [[Riverrun]] while [[Edmure Tully|Edmure]] is off at battle, and [[Utherydes Wayn]], the castle's [[steward]], have confined [[Catelyn Stark|Catelyn]] to [[keep of Riverrun|the rooms]] of her father, [[Hoster Tully]], with the exception of visits to [[sept at Riverrun|the sept]], for having released [[Jaime Lannister]] without the consent of King [[Robb Stark|Robb]] or Edmure. Desmond and Utherydes attribute Catelyn's actions to madness caused by hearing of the [[capture of Winterfell|supposed deaths]] of her sons, [[Bran Stark|Bran]] and [[Rickon Stark|Rickon]].

Catelyn is aware Desmond has dispatched Ser [[Robin Ryger]] to bring back Jaime, but she hopes that he fails. Her father's room smells of death and it makes Catelyn think of [[Eddard Stark|Ned]] and her two youngest boys. Lord Hoster is having fever dreams and mumbling, "Forgive me ... the blood ... oh, please ... Tansy ..." and "''Dead''" and " ... you'll have others ... sweet babes, and trueborn." After [[Vyman]] quickly gives [[milk of the poppy]] to Hoster, Catelyn asks him about Tansy but the [[maester]] does not know a woman by that name.

While watching the [[Tumblestone]] and the [[Red Fork]] from her father's balcony, Catelyn sees a [[raven]] arrive at the castle. Vyman later tells her that Utherydes does not recognize the name Tansy either, and that the raven bore a message stating that Robb had taken a wound during the [[storming of the Crag]], though it is not thought to be serious.

Before dawn, Catelyn recalls that [[Lysa Arryn|Lysa]] has had five miscarriages since her marriage and deduces that Lysa must have miscarried before marrying as well. She realizes that [[Jon Arryn]] had no heir at the time of her and Lysa's [[weddings of Catelyn and Lysa Tully|twin betrothals]]. He was older than their father and as a soiled bride, "Lysa was the price Jon Arryn had to pay for the swords of [[House Tully]]." She does not know who the father of the original miscarriage might have been. Catelyn writes a letter to Lysa pleading for her to come to Riverrun before their father passes away saying, "He needs your forgiveness," but she realizes Lord Hoster will be gone before the raven even makes it to the [[Eyrie]].

Catelyn goes to the sept and lights three candles: one for the [[Father (the Seven)|Father Above]] for her own father, one for the [[Crone (the Seven)|Crone]] "who let the first raven into the world when she peered through the door of death", and one for the [[Mother (the Seven)|Mother]] for Lysa and all the children they had both lost. 

Later, Catelyn sees Edmure returning to Riverrun from the [[Battle of the Fords]]. Edmure eventually visits his sister, informing Catelyn that he turned away the [[House Lannister|Lannisters]], but that [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]] lost [[Battle of the Blackwater|the battle]] for [[King's Landing]] and that [[Highgarden]] and [[Dorne]] have both declared for [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]]. Edmure scolds Catelyn for freeing Jaime and tells her [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]] will never free Catelyn's daughters, but Catelyn claims [[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] will be held to the word he spoke in open court and the Kingslayer gave his word as well. Edmure dismisses Jaime's words as worthless and informs Catelyn that Tyrion took an axe to the head and is most likely dead. Edmure has sent three ravens to [[Roose Bolton]] at [[Harrenhal]] informing him that Jaime has escaped. Catelyn despairs because if Jaime is believed to have escaped instead of being released as part of a prisoner swap, the Lannisters have no reason to free Catelyn's daughters and give them to Jaime's escort, [[Brienne Tarth|Brienne]].
