When his elder brother [[Rickon Stark (son of Benjen)|Rickon Stark]], [[Lord of Winterfell]] and [[Warden of the North]], died in {{Date|121}}, Bennard ruled the [[north]] as [[regent]] during the minority of his lord nephew, [[Cregan Stark|Cregan]]. When Cregan came of age in {{Date|124}}, Bennard was slow to surrender his power. Relations grew strained between Bennard and Cregan as the young Lord of Winterfell chafed under the limits imposed on him by his uncle.{{Ref|FAB|A Son for a Son}}
