Brynden is tall and lean,{{Ref|ACOK|7}} with a hoarse, smoky voice.{{Ref|AGOT|34}} He is clean-shaven,{{Ref|ACOK|7}} and his face is craggy and windburnt, his features lined and weathered.{{Ref|AGOT|34}} His once-auburn hair has gone to grey.{{Ref|AGOT|34}} The Blackfish has bushy eyebrows and laughing eyes of deep blue.{{Ref|AGOT|34}}

A kind man with the patience to listen,{{Ref|AGOT|34}} Brynden is also a blunt{{Ref|AGOT|34}} and stubborn man{{Ref|AFFC|33}} who does not care what others think.{{Ref|ASOS|14}} He is a seasoned warrior, a veteran of half a hundred battles,{{Ref|ACOK|39}} and precise in his movements.{{Ref|ACOK|7}} [[Catelyn Stark]] thinks her uncle is brilliant.{{ref|ASOS|45}} He is also a strong swimmer.{{Ref|AFFC|44}}

As the [[Knight of the Gate]], Brynden wears grey heavy plate armor and helm, but when commanding outriders he trades this for mail and leather.{{Ref|AGOT|34}}{{Ref|AGOT|59}} Brynden also owns grey ringmail under blackened [[steel]], with a black [[trout]] adorning the helm's crest.{{Ref|AFFC|38}} He rides a grey [[horse]],{{Ref|AGOT|34}} as well as a chestnut courser decorated in red and blue.{{Ref|AFFC|38}} Brynden's cloak, in the blue-and-red colors of House Tully, is fastened by a clasp of [[obsidian]] and gold in the shape of a black fish,{{Ref|AGOT|34}}{{Ref|AGOT|59}}{{Ref|AFFC|38}} his only concession to ornament.{{Ref|AGOT|40}} The banner of his standard-bearer depicts a black fish.{{Ref|AGOT|34}}
