==Background==

[[House Tyrell]] aligns itself with King [[Renly Baratheon]] at the start of the [[War of the Five Kings]], in {{Date|299}}, with Renly marrying [[Margaery Tyrell]].{{ref|AGOT|69}} Following [[siege of Storm's End (299)|Renly's death]], the [[small council]] sends Lord [[Petyr Baelish]] to negotiate an alliance between Houses Tyrell and [[House Lannister|Lannister]], supporting the claim of King [[Joffrey Baratheon]].{{ref|ACOK|36}} After the [[Battle of the Blackwater]], Joffrey discards [[Sansa Stark]] and is betrothed to Margaery.{{ref|ACOK|65}} 

Lord [[Tywin Lannister]] set the first day of the new year, {{Date|300}}, as the date for the great wedding, so that the ceremony heralds the dawn of a new era.{{ref|ASOS|4}}{{refn|group="N"|According to Tywin, the first day of 300 AC happens to be also the first day of the new century. However, that is not mathematically correct, because the fourth century since the foundation of the [[Seven Kingdoms]] will actually begin in 301 AC.}}

Ser [[Dontos Hollard]] tells Sansa she will be able to escape captivity during the upcoming wedding, and he gives her a [[silver hair net]] decorated with black [[amethyst]]s from [[Asshai]].{{ref|ACOK|65}} Dontos insists that Sansa wear the hair net during the wedding.{{ref|ASOS|16}}

After arriving in [[King's Landing]], Margaery's grandmother, [[Olenna Tyrell]], questions Sansa about Joffrey to see if the stories of the boy king's cruelty are true.{{ref|ASOS|6}} Instead of Joffrey, Sansa is forced by Tywin Lannister to marry [[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]], Joffrey's uncle and Tywin's son.{{ref|ASOS|28}}

[[Arya Stark]] overhears the [[ghost of High Heart]] telling the [[brotherhood without banners]] that "she dreamt of a maid at a feast with purple serpents in her hair, venom dripping from their fangs".{{ref|ASOS|43}}
