The islands of the Stepstones are described as barren and storm-swept rocks by Archmaester [[Gyldayn]],{{ref|FAB|Heirs of the Dragon - A Question of Succession}} and as bleak and stony by Maester [[Yandel]].{{Ref|TWOIAF|The Stormlands}} The chain is often wracked by large storms coming up from the warm waters of the Summer Sea to the south, which sweep over the isles as they pass north to slam into the aptly-named [[Shipbreaker Bay]].{{Ref|TWOIAF|The Stormlands}}{{Ref|AFFC|29}}
