Sworn Brothers are attired all in black,{{ref|AGOT|21}}{{ref|ASOS|7}} with roughspun wool being common,{{ref|AGOT|19}} so new recruits are said to "take the black".{{ref|AGOT|6}} Officers and brothers who come from wealthier origins might wear velvet,{{ref|AGOT|5}}{{ref|ASOS|75}} crisp leathers,{{ref|AGOT|19}} moleskin,{{ref|AGOT|Prologue}}{{ref|AGOT|70}} or sable.{{ref|ACOK|23}} 

The black garb has earned the Watch the nickname "[[crow]]s",{{ref|ACOK|14}}{{ref|ACOK|16}}{{ref|AFFC|34}}{{ref|ADWD|31}} or "black birds,"{{Ref|ACOK|9}} particularly among the [[free folk]], who often call them "black crows."{{ref|AGOT|37}}{{ref|ACOK|23}} While some use this name derogatorily, many in the Night's Watch have adopted the term for their own use.{{ref|ASOS|56}} They are also called the "black brothers",{{ref|AGOT|Prologue}} and in song they have been called the "black knights of the Wall."{{ref|AGOT|44}} Each brother receives a dark cloak,{{ref|ACOK|34}} so the Watch are also called "black cloaks".{{ref|ASOS|75}} Because members swear oaths to serve for life, a stranger wearing black attire is often viewed with suspicion in the [[north]] because he might be a deserter.{{ref|AGOT|70}} 

Armor includes black ringmail{{ref|ACOK|5}} hauberks and coifs,{{ref|AGOT|70}} as well as halfhelms.{{ref|ASOS|73}} All black brothers carry a steel knife.{{ref|ASOS|46}} Nobles relinquish the heraldry of their houses and take up plain black shields.{{ref|ADWD|69}} Brothers can carry axes, longaxes, bows, knives, spears, swords, and longswords.{{ref|AGOT|Prologue}}{{ref|ACOK|43}}{{ref|ACOK|68}}{{ref|ASOS|18}} Guardsmen carry warhorns,{{ref|AGOT|21}} while foresters uses axes to chop down trees.{{ref|ACOK|34}} The Watch can defend the Wall with catapults, scorpions, and trebuchets.{{ref|ASOS|64}} When ranging [[beyond the Wall]], the brothers camp in black tents.{{ref|ACOK|34}}
