Free folk who submit to Stannis are allowed to pass through the Wall.{{Ref|ADWD|10}} [[Bowen Marsh]] objects, preferring instead to seal the gates.{{ref|ADWD|10}} Some of the free folk accept Jon's offer to help man the Wall.{{Ref|ADWD|21}} Jon sends [[Val]] to find [[Tormund Giantsbane]] in the [[haunted forest]],{{Ref|ADWD|39}} and Tormund eventually agrees to pass through the Wall.{{Ref|ADWD|58}}

Lord Commander Snow puts plans in motion to man most of the castles. These include:

[[Builders]] begin construction on a new switchback stair to replace the ruined one at Castle Black.{{Ref|ADWD|3}} Jon intends for a series of beacon towers to be built atop the Wall.{{Ref|ADWD|7}} Jon decides to hang [[Janos Slynt]] from the Wall for insubordination, but he changes his mind and instead beheads Janos with [[Longclaw]].{{Ref|ADWD|7}}

Melisandre thinks she is stronger than she has ever been while at the Wall.{{Ref|ADWD|31}} She burns what is claimed to be the Horn of Winter,{{Ref|ADWD|10}} but Tormund later explains to Jon that Mance never found the horn which could bring down the Wall.{{Ref|ADWD|58}} Jon has a nightmare of defending the top of the Wall from the dead, including wildlings, Night's Watch, and his half brother, [[Robb Stark]].{{Ref|ADWD|58}} The Lord Commander is eventually betrayed in the [[mutiny at Castle Black]].{{Ref|ADWD|69}}
