Having gathered the free folk to the [[Frostfangs]], [[Mance Rayder]] sets them on the move south to the Wall, fleeing from the [[Others]].{{Ref|ASOS|73}} Mance sends a force over the Wall to try and [[Attack on Castle Black|attack Castle Black]] from the south so they can open the gate and pass the Wall.{{Ref|ASOS|48}}{{Ref|ASOS|73}} Ninety-eight [[Thenn (people)|Thenns]] and sixteen raiders [[Attack on Castle Black|attack Castle Black]], but are defeated.{{Ref|ASOS|55}} Mance has his force [[Battle beneath the Wall|attack the Wall]], attempting multiple times to breach the gate.{{Ref|ASOS|64}}{{Ref|ASOS|69}} They are eventually defeated when reinforcements from [[Eastwatch-by-the-sea]] arrive with the southern host of [[Stannis Baratheon]].{{Ref|ASOS|73}} A thousand of the free folk, including Mance, are captured, and another thousand killed.{{Ref|ASOS|76}} The others flee.{{Ref|ADWD|prologue}}
