According to Ser [[Barristan Selmy]], it has been "a thousand years" since Meereen last had [[King of Meereen|a king]].{{ref|ADWD|55}}{{refn|group=N|name=date|It is unknown if this means one thousand years ago (seven hundred years before [[Aegon's Conquest]]) or if [[George R. R. Martin]] is being figurative.}}

Meereen was a colony of the [[Old Empire of Ghis]]. [[Cedar]]s once grew tall along the coast but grow no more; they were felled by the axes of the Old Empire or consumed by [[dragonfire]] when Ghis made war against [[Valyria]]. Once the trees had gone, the soil baked beneath the hot sun and blew away in thick red clouds. According to [[Galazza Galare]], it was these calamities that transformed her people into slavers.{{Ref|ADWD|16}} Meereen survived the destruction of [[Old Ghis]] at the hands of the [[Valyrian Freehold]] and was subsequently was conquered by the Valyrians, who learned [[slavery]] from the conquered [[Ghiscari]] and used slaves to expand their empire.{{ref|TWOIAF|Anocient History: Valyria's Children}}

The modern Ghiscari in Meereen now speak [[Meereenese language|a blend]] of the [[High Valyrian]] of their conquerors and [[Old Ghiscari]].{{Ref|ADWD|2}}{{Ref|ADWD|14}}{{Ref|ADWD|60}} Following the fall of the Freehold during the [[Doom of Valyria]], the Ghiscari of [[Slaver's Bay]] took control of the slave trade.{{ref|TWOIAF|Ancient History: The Rise of Valyria}} 

The slave [[Belwas]] was bred and trained in the fighting pits of Meereen.{{Ref|ASOS|8}} From Meereen, he was eventually sold to [[Qohor]].{{Ref|ACOK|63}}
