==History==
Edmure was born as the third child and only living son of Lord [[Hoster Tully]] and Lady [[Minisa Tully|Minisa Whent]]. Edmure's mother died while giving birth to his baby brother, who also died.{{ref|ACOK|33}}

As a youth, Edmure was known as hot-headed but good-hearted. He had a number of friends who had similar characteristics, most notably [[Marq Piper]]. Edmure once broke his arm after falling from an [[elm]] in the [[godswood of Riverrun]].{{ref|AGOT|71}}

Edmure gave [[Petyr Baelish]], Hoster's [[ward]], the nickname "Littlefinger", because of [[House Baelish]]'s holdings on the [[Fingers]] and because of Petyr's short stature.{{Ref|AGOT|18}} When Lords [[Lord Blackwood (Aerys II)|Blackwood]] and [[Lord Bracken (Aerys II)|Bracken]] visited Hoster to discuss their feud, young Edmure, his sisters, and Petyr drank [[wine]] while the adults were preoccupied.{{Ref|ASOS|80}} When Petyr challenged [[Brandon Stark]], the [[betrothed]] of Edmure's sister [[Catelyn Stark|Catelyn]], for her hand, Edmure served as Brandon's [[squire]]. Brandon easily defeated Petyr in [[duel between Brandon Stark and Petyr Baelish|their duel]], and the wounded Littlefinger sent Edmure away when he tried to visit afterward.{{ref|AGOT|40}}

Hoster refused an offer by Lord [[Walder Frey]] to wed Edmure to one of his daughters.{{ref|AGOT|59}} Princess [[Arianne Martell]] wanted to accept Hoster's offer for her to meet Edmure at Riverrun, but [[Doran Martell]], [[Prince of Dorne]], declined because of a [[secret marriage pact]].{{ref|AFFC|40}}
