When Harren the Black and his sons perished in the [[burning of Harrenhal]], [[Aegon I Targaryen]] granted the [[riverlands]] to Lord [[Edmyn Tully]] of [[Riverrun]]. The surviving [[ironborn]] fell into chaotic squabbling after the extinction of [[House Hoare]], leading to an [[invasion of the Iron Islands]] by Aegon to subdue them. After the ironborn bent the knee, Aegon allowed them to revive their ancient custom and choose who should have the primacy among them.
