King [[Jaehaerys I Targaryen]] once chose his Lord Commander, Ser [[Ryam Redwyne]], to be [[Hand of the King]], but the famed [[knight]] turned out to be a poor advisor.{{Ref|FAB|Heirs of the Dragon - A Question of Succession}}

Ser [[Criston Cole]], the Lord Commander for King [[Viserys I Targaryen]], disobeyed the king's will after his passing and crowned [[Aegon II Targaryen]] instead of [[Rhaenyra Targaryen]].{{Ref|FAB|The Dying of the Dragons - The Blacks and the Greens}} The Kingmaker was slain in the ensuing [[Dance of the Dragons]].{{Ref|FAB|The Dying of the Dragons - Rhaenyra Triumphant}}

During [[Regency of Aegon III|the regency]] of the young King [[Aegon III Targaryen]], Ser [[Robin Massey]] was named Lord Commander by Aegon but the appointment was later set aside by the [[Regent|Lord Regent]] and [[Hand of the King]], Lord [[Unwin Peake]], in {{Date|133}}.{{Ref|FAB|Under the Regents - War and Peace and Cattle Shows}} Aegon denied the appointment of Ser [[Marston Waters]] as Hand during the [[secret siege]].{{Ref|FAB|The Lysene Spring and the End of Regency}}

In {{Date|253}},{{Ref|AWOIAF|Duncan}} [[Duncan the Tall]], the Lord Commander for King [[Aegon V]], was unhorsed in a [[winter tourney at King's Landing]] by a sixteen-year-old [[Barristan Selmy]], who would later become a Lord Commander himself.{{Ref|ASOS|67}} In {{Date|259}}, Duncan apparently perished in the [[tragedy of Summerhall]], along with King Aegon V and Prince [[Duncan the Small]], among others.{{Ref|AWOIAF|Duncan}}{{Ref|TWOIAF|4|15}}

Gerold was slain in [[combat at the Tower of Joy]] during [[Robert's Rebellion]] in {{Date|283}}.{{Ref|AGOT|39}} The only Kingsguard who survived the rebellion were Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser [[Jaime Lannister]], whose lives were chivalrously spared by the new king, [[Robert I Baratheon]],{{Ref|ASOS|71}}{{Ref|TWOIAF|The Fall of the Dragons: Robert's Rebellion}} with the former being named Lord Commander, while the latter would go on to succeed him.{{Ref|ASOS|67}}
