The Northern mountains are inhabited by [[northern mountain clans|clans]] who have lands and holdfasts and fastnesses{{ref|ASOS|55}} throughout the region, in the high valleys and mountain meadows.{{ref|ADWD|17}} Some clans have fastnesses big enough to be called castles, though they would be considered small and crudely constructed in comparison to the great castles of the south.<ref>[[So Spake Martin]]: [http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/SSM/Entry/Northern_Clans Northern Clans], February 12, 2001</ref> There are forty mountain clans, large and small, and they are proud followers of the [[old gods]].{{ref|ADWD|17}} During [[winter]], many clansmen leave the mountains for the safety of the [[winter town]] or to take up service at larger castles.{{ref|ADWD|49}}

The most powerful of the clans are the [[House Wull|Wulls]],{{ref|TWOIAF|The North: The Mountain Clans}} who live to the west along the [[Bay of Ice]].{{ref|ASOS|24}} The [[House Harclay|Harclays]] reside in the hills near the [[wolfswood]] and [[Winterfell]].{{ref|ASOS|24}} The [[House Flint of the mountains|First Flints]], the [[House Knott|Knotts]], the [[House Liddle|Liddles]], and the [[House Norrey|Norreys]] dwell in the high places,{{ref|ASOS|24}} with the Norreys living closest to the [[Gift]].{{ref|ADWD|17}} The [[House Burley|Burleys]] are also a prominent clan.{{ref|ASOS|24}} 

Separate from the clans, the [[House Umber|Umbers]] graze their sheep in the high meadows in summertime.{{ref|ASOS|24}} [[Highpoint]], the seat of [[House Whitehill (Telltale)|House Whitehill]] in ''[[Game of Thrones - A Telltale Games Series]]'', is located in the south of the mountains where they meet the northern wolfswood, north of [[Winterfell]] and west of Long Lake.{{ref|TT|3}}

The mountains are sometimes raided by [[wildlings]] from [[beyond the Wall]],{{ref|ADWD|53}} while the shores of the Bay of Ice have historically been raided by [[ironborn]].{{ref|TWOIAF|The North: The Mountain Clans}}
