As a toddler Walder was present at the [[wedding]] of [[Lady Frey (wife of Ambrose Butterwell)|his elder sister]] to Lord [[Ambrose Butterwell]] at [[Wedding tourney at Whitewalls|Whitewalls]].<ref group="N">Though he is not referred to by name, [[George R. Martin]] [http://grrm.livejournal.com/184176.html?thread=11366512#t11366512 has confirmed] that the four-year-old son of Lord Frey appearing in ''[[The Mystery Knight]]'' is Walder.</ref> It is said he caused the marriage when he discovered his sister having intimate relations with a servant. Ser [[Duncan the Tall]] thought that Walder was an extremely annoying child, and was sorely tempted to throw him down a well.{{Ref|TMK}}

When Lord [[Tytos Lannister]] acquiesced to Walder's proposal to marry his second son, [[Emmon Frey|Emmon]], to Tytos's daughter [[Genna Lannister|Genna]], the ten-year-old [[Tywin Lannister]] spoke out against the match.{{Ref|AFFC|33}}
