Outside the [[cave of the three-eyed crow]] [[beyond the Wall]], [[Bran Stark]] and his companions — [[Hodor]], [[Meera Reed|Meera]], and [[Jojen Reed]] — are attacked by [[wight]]s. A cloud of [[raven]]s pours from the cave, and Bran sees what appears to be a girl, almost like his sister [[Arya Stark|Arya]], chasing off the wights with the fire of a torch. Bran then realizes she is not a girl, but a child of the forest, who leads them into the cave of the [[last greenseer]], Lord Brynden.{{Ref|aDwD|13}}

The little woman explains about the children of the forest to Bran and his companions, calling them "those who sing the song of earth". She explains that the children in the cave have names too long for the human tongue, so Bran and Meera give them names. Meera calls the little woman Leaf. Leaf warns the company not to wander too far in the cave because of its dangers, saying that not even her people have explored all its passages despite living there for a thousand thousand years.{{Ref|aDwD|34}}

Leaf helps Lord Brynden train Bran as a [[greenseer]], giving him [[weirwood paste]]. When Bran sees a [[vision]] of his late father, [[Eddard Stark]], Leaf warns Bran not to try to call him back from death.{{Ref|aDwD|34}}
