Illyrio has been hosting the exiles [[Viserys Targaryen|Viserys]] and [[Daenerys Targaryen]] at [[Illyrio's manse|his manse]] in [[Pentos]] for almost half a year. He hopes to be rewarded if Viserys is able to reclaim the [[Iron Throne]] for [[House Targaryen]], and he encourages Viserys's ambitions by telling him of [[Westeros]]i people awaiting the return of their rightful king.{{ref|AGOT|3}}

Illyrio brokers an arranged marriage between Daenerys and Khal [[Drogo]], so that Viserys can use Drogo's powerful ''[[khalasar]]'' as an invasion force. Before introducing the girl to the ''[[khal]]'', Illyrio attires Daenerys with a plum silken gown, a tiara, gilded sandals, [[gold]]en bracelets encrust with [[amethyst]]s, and a golden collar decorated with [[Valyria]]n glyphs.{{ref|AGOT|3}}

The magister provides fine [[wine]]s for [[wedding of Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen|the wedding feast]], and later gives the bride a chest containing fine [[velvet]]s and [[damask]]s and three petrified [[dragon egg]]s from the [[Shadow Lands]] as a wedding gift.{{Ref|AGOT|11}} Viserys gives his sister three servants—[[Doreah]], [[Irri]], and [[Jhiqui]]—although Daenerys realizes the women were actually provided by Illyrio.{{ref|AGOT|11}}

While exploring the lower levels of the [[Red Keep]], [[Arya Stark]] overhears Illyrio and Lord [[Varys]] scheming on behalf of Daenerys against King [[Robert I Baratheon]], although she does not recognize them. Arya tells her father, Lord [[Eddard Stark]], but the [[Hand of the King]] thinks his daughter simply overheard a pair of [[mummers]] in [[King's Landing]] for the [[Hand's tourney]].{{ref|AGOT|32}}

Magister Illyrio encourages Viserys to remain with him in Pentos, but the would-be king insists on accompanying Drogo and Daenerys when they depart the coastal city.{{ref|AGOT|23}} Viserys ends up killed in [[Vaes Dothrak]], the holy city of the [[Dothraki]].{{ref|AGOT|46}}

Illyrio sends a letter warning that King Robert is offering rewards for the deaths of the remaining Targaryens, as Daenerys is pregnant with Drogo's child.{{ref|AGOT|54}}

Daenerys hatches the eggs after the deaths of Drogo and [[Rhaego]], with three [[dragon]]s emerging from Drogo's funeral pyre.{{Ref|AGOT|72}}
