===Hand and exile===

In {{Date|37}}, Maegor's father, King Aegon I, died, and his half-brother Aenys ascended the throne as King [[Aenys I Targaryen]]. Admitting to all assembled at Aegon I's funeral pyre that he was not nearly the warrior his half-brother was, Aenys presented Maegor with Aegon's [[Valyrian steel]] blade, [[Blackfyre]], proclaiming they would rule together.{{Ref|FAB|The Sons of the Dragon}}

After Aegon I's death, Maegor finally claimed a dragon, his father's mount, [[Balerion]] who Maegor had long coveted as his own. Shortly after Aenys's ascension to the throne, several rebellions broke out. In the [[Vale of Arryn]], [[Jonos Arryn]] rose against his brother, Lord [[Ronnel Arryn (king)|Ronnel]], imprisoning him and his family. Although he arrived too late to rescue Lord Ronnel, Maegor personally crushed this rebellion, flying on Balerion to the [[Eyrie]]. Hoping Maegor would show them mercy, Jonos's followers threw Jonos through the [[Moon Door]]. Nonetheless, Maegor had all of them hanged.{{Ref|FAB|The Sons of the Dragon}} To replace Lord [[Alyn Stokeworth]], who had died fighting [[Harren the Red|another rebel]], King Aenys I named Maegor as his new [[Hand of the King]] to reward him for his service, an office Maegor held for two years.{{Ref|FAB|The Sons of the Dragon}}{{Ref|TWOIAF|The Targaryen Kings: Aenys I}}

Even though they had been married since {{Date|25}}, Maegor and [[Ceryse Hightower|Ceryse]] still had no children by {{Date|39}}. In {{Date|39}}, Maegor suddenly announced that Ceryse was barren and that he had taken another wife, Lady [[Alys Harroway]]. Unable to convince the [[septon]] at [[Dragonstone]] to perform the wedding, Maegor and Alys had been wed in a [[Valyria]]n [[marriage|wedding ceremony]] led by Dowager Queen [[Visenya Targaryen]]. This marriage angered many. Maegor quarreled bitterly with his brother, King Aenys, while Ceryse's brother, Lord [[Martyn Hightower]], demanded that Maegor set Alys aside. The [[High Septon (Aenys I)|High Septon]] denounced the marriage as sin and fornication and called Alys ''"this whore of Harroway."'' Many of the pious lords in the realm began to follow his example, openly referring to Alys as ''"Maegor's Whore"''. Maegor remained defiant, however, citing that his father had taken two wives as well, claiming that the strictures of the Faith did not rule [[House Targaryen|the blood of the dragon]].{{Ref|FAB|The Sons of the Dragon}}

Feeling he had no other option,{{Ref|TWOIAF|The Targaryen Kings: Aenys I}} Aenys furiously gave Maegor a choice: set Alys aside or go into exile for five years. Maegor chose the latter option and in {{Date|40}} left for [[Pentos]] with Alys and [[Balerion]]. He also took the sword Blackfyre with him, refusing Aenys's request to leave the sword behind.{{Ref|FAB|The Sons of the Dragon}} Septon [[Murmison]] replaced Maegor as Hand.
