According to his mother, Lady [[Sybell Spicer]], Raynald was unaware of the arrangement she and her brother, Ser [[Rolph Spicer]], had with Lord [[Tywin Lannister]]. Sybell informs Ser [[Jaime Lannister]] that Raynald should have "joy to marry" a bride from [[Casterly Rock]]. Jaime understands this as Tywin intended to marry Raynald to his [[bastard]] niece, [[Joy Hill]]. The notion of her son marrying a bastard upsets Sybell.{{Ref|AFFC|44}} However, according to a semi-canon source, this is a misunderstanding on Jaime's part{{Ref|AWOIAF|Joy Hill}} as Tywin already arranged for Joy to marry one of Lord [[Walder Frey]]'s natural sons.{{Ref|ASOS|53}}

After the resolution of the [[siege of Riverrun]], Ser Jaime Lannister asks about Raynald's fate. [[Edwyn Frey]] and [[Walder Rivers]] reveal that Raynald surrendered his sword to Ser [[Whalen Frey]], but then seized Whalen's axe to free Grey Wind from his chains in the stables when several Frey crossbowmen tried to kill the direwolf. While doing so, Raynald was hit by a crossbow bolt in the shoulder and gut, but still managed to throw himself into the [[Green Fork]]. Raynald's body was not identified among the thousand corpses afterward, but his trail of blood led to the river's steps.{{Ref|AFFC|44}}
