Robb attends the execution of [[Gared]] and discovers a litter of six [[direwolf]] pups in the snow. He claims one of the direwolves for his own and names him [[Grey Wind]].{{Ref|AGOT|1}} Shortly after the court of King [[Robert I Baratheon]] arrives at [[Winterfell]], Robb spars with the crown prince, [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]], using wooden swords. Bad blood develops between the two when Joffrey challenges Robb to spar with live [[steel]]. Ser [[Rodrik Cassel]], Winterfell's master-at-arms, does not allow it, to the mockery and chagrin of many of the present retainers of [[House Lannister]].{{Ref|AGOT|6}} Robb escorts Princess [[Myrcella Baratheon]], to the feast in the [[Great Hall of Winterfell]].{{ref|AGOT|7}}

When his father [[Eddard Stark|Eddard]], [[Lord of Winterfell]], is named [[Hand of the King]] to Robert and journeys south to [[King's Landing]], Robb remains in Winterfell to rule in his father's stead with the help of his mother, [[Catelyn Stark]].{{Ref|AGOT|6}} She becomes traumatized when her younger son [[Bran Stark|Bran]] is crippled by a fall from the [[First Keep]], however, so more responsibility falls on Robb.{{ref|AGOT|14}} After [[catspaw|an assassin]] tries to kill the comatose Bran,{{Ref|AGOT|14}} Catelyn travels to King's Landing to inform Eddard.{{Ref|AGOT|18}}

Robb holds court as the Stark in Winterfell, meeting with [[Tyrion Lannister]] and [[Yoren]] in the Great Hall and traveling to distant holdfasts.{{Ref|AGOT|24}} While riding in the [[wolfswood]], Robb and his friend, [[Theon Greyjoy]], rescue the crippled Bran from [[wildlings]] and deserters from the [[Night's Watch]], with Robb killing an axeman with his sword and then subduing [[Osha]]. Robb criticizes Theon for shooting an arrow near Bran.{{Ref|AGOT|37}}

After word arrives of [[arrest of Eddard Stark|Eddard's arrest]] in King's Landing for treason against the late king Robert's successor, Joffrey, Robb calls the Stark bannermen to Winterfell. [[Maege Mormont]], [[Lady of Bear Island]], tries to interest Robb in a granddaughter, and [[Medger Cerwyn]], [[Lord of Cerwyn]], introduces him to his own daughter, [[Jonelle Cerwyn|Jonelle]]. [[Halys Hornwood]], [[Lord of the Hornwood]], offers gifts in return for land and rights, while [[Roose Bolton]], [[Lord of the Dreadfort]], and [[Robett Glover]] both seek battle command. When [[Jon Umber]], [[Lord of the Last Hearth]], threatens Robb's authority, the youth has [[Grey Wind]] attack the Greatjon, biting off two fingers; a laughing Lord Umber becomes Robb's greatest champion. Despite his youth and inexperience, Robb unites the bannermen.{{Ref|AGOT|53}}

When Robb marches south to the [[riverlands]], his motives are to support his mother Catelyn's family, [[House Tully]], in response to the invasion of House Lannister from the [[westerlands]], and to bring back his father Eddard.{{Ref|AGOT|53}} Bran remains at Winterfell with Maester [[Luwin]]{{Ref|AGOT|53}} and Rodrik Cassel.{{Ref|AGOT|55}}

Robb begins growing a beard while marching south.{{ref|AGOT|55}} He resides in the [[Gatehouse Tower]] while encamped at [[Moat Cailin]], where his host is joined by Catelyn, Ser [[Brynden Tully]], and the levies from [[White Harbor]].{{Ref|AGOT|55}} They learn that [[Riverrun]] has been besieged by a host led by Ser [[Jaime Lannister]], whilst another force led by [[Tywin Lannister]], [[Lord of Casterly Rock]], approaches from the south. Robb plans to split his forces, sending his foot under the command of Lord Bolton to engage Tywin's army, while himself crossing the [[Green Fork]] with the majority of his horse so he can lift the siege of Riverrun.{{Ref|AGOT|55}}

For allowing Robb to cross the river at the [[Twins]] and grant the northman his allegiance, [[Walder Frey]], [[Lord of the Crossing]], extracts the price of a marriage contract, ensuring that Robb will marry one of his daughters after the war is finished. [[Olyvar Frey]], one of Walder's sons, becomes Robb's personal squire.{{Ref|AGOT|59}}

[[Jason Mallister]], [[Lord of Seagard]], joins Robb as he continues south toward Riverrun.{{Ref|AGOT|63}} Robb is protected by a [[Robb Stark's battle guard|battle guard of highborn warriors]] who become his friends and companions.{{Ref|AGOT|63}}

With the aid of his great-uncle, Brynden the Blackfish, Robb achieves complete surprise in ambushing Jaime in the [[Battle in the Whispering Wood|Whispering Wood]], annihilating the Lannister horsemen. Before being captured, Jaime slays [[Torrhen Karstark|Torrhen]] and [[Eddard Karstark]] and [[Daryn Hornwood]] while fighting to get to Robb.{{Ref|AGOT|63}} Shortly thereafter Robb lifts the siege of Riverrun through the [[Battle of the Camps]],{{Ref|AGOT|71}} scattering Jaime's remaining forces. This forces Tywin's army, which had scored a victory against Roose Bolton's foot in the [[battle on the Green Fork]], to retreat back to [[Harrenhal]].{{Ref|AGOT|69}}   

Meanwhile, Eddard Stark is executed for treason at the [[Great Sept of Baelor]] at the command of King Joffrey, effectively ending the possibility of peace between Stark and Lannister. In the [[Great Hall of Riverrun]], Robb, now Lord of Winterfell, is conflicted over whom to support after [[Renly Baratheon]] is crowned at [[Highgarden]] in opposition to Joffrey. When Lord Umber offers his sword and proclaims Robb to be [[King in the North]], the assembled [[northmen]] and river lords also bend the knee and take up the Greatjon's call.{{Ref|AGOT|71}} The [[rivermen]] later grant Robb the title [[King of the Trident]].{{Ref|ASOS|Appendix}}

[[Jon Snow]] deserts [[Castle Black]] so he can help his half brother, Robb, in the south, but Jon's new brothers in the Night's Watch convince him to return to the [[Wall]].{{Ref|AGOT|70}}
