At the [[crossroads inn]], a [[House Frey|Frey]] captain tells [[Catelyn Stark]] that Lord Walder is to remarry on his ninetieth [[name day]].{{ref|AGOT|28}} After Catelyn abducts [[Tyrion Lannister]],{{ref|AGOT|28}} the Frey contingent at the crossroads report back to Walder.{{ref|AGOT|31}}

Catelyn's ailing father, Lord [[Hoster Tully]], declines to attend [[Wedding of Walder Frey and Joyeuse Erenford|Walder's wedding]] to [[Joyeuse Erenford]].{{ref|AGOT|59}}

Walder is slow in answering [[House Tully]]'s summons when Ser [[Edmure Tully|Edmure]] calls the banners. Aside from skirmishing with Ser [[Addam Marbrand]]'s [[House Lannister|Lannister]] outriders, the [[House Frey|Freys]] mass their strength within the [[Twins]].{{ref|AGOT|59}} Edmure is defeated by Ser [[Jaime Lannister]] at [[battle under the walls of Riverrun|Riverrun]]{{Ref|AGOT|56}} while Walder gathers his forces.{{ref|AGOT|59}}

Because the use of the Twins becomes a strategic necessity for the host of Catelyn's son, [[Robb Stark]], Walder negotiates marriage contracts with Catelyn. Robb is to marry one of Walder's daughters once there is peace and his sister, [[Arya Stark|Arya]], is betrothed to Walder's youngest son, [[Elmar Frey|Elmar]]. In addition, two of Lord Frey's grandsons, [[Walder Frey (son of Merrett)|Little Walder]] and [[Walder Frey (son of Jammos)|Big Walder]], are sent to [[Winterfell]] as wards and one of his sons, [[Olyvar Frey|Olyvar]], is made squire to Robb.{{ref|AGOT|59}}
