After Jon is brought to [[Mance Rayder]]'s host, the youth uses Ghost to keep [[Ygritte]] away from him at night. Ygritte eventually seduces Jon, however.{{Ref|ASOS|15}}

Before ascending the [[Wall]] with [[Styr]]'s group, Jon sends Ghost away with instructions to go to [[Castle Black]].{{Ref|ASOS|26}} He does not know if Ghost understands his instructions and does not hear of Ghost's whereabouts for a great while. By the time Jon returns to Castle Black, he seems to have attained at least a tentative acceptance of his warg powers.{{Ref|ASOS|48}} Ghost is still missing beyond the Wall, however, and Jon cannot sense him.{{Ref|ASOS|79}}<ref name="interview" />

In the aftermath of the [[battle beneath the Wall]], Jon is reluctant to accept [[Stannis Baratheon]]'s offer to become [[Lord of Winterfell]], as doing so would require the burning of the [[heart tree]] in the [[godswood of Winterfell|castle's godswood]]. Ghost emerges from the [[haunted forest]] when Jon ventures north of the Wall, and they are reunited to their mutual joy. Jon sees it as a sign to decline Stannis's offer, and he is then surprised by being chosen as the new [[Lord Commander of the Night's Watch]].{{Ref|ASOS|79}}
