The Brave Companions scatter with the [[capture of Harrenhal]] by Ser [[Gregor Clegane]]. Jaime hopes to find [[Pyg]] and Shagwell in Harrenhal's dungeon when he returns to the castle, but they have already departed.{{ref|AFFC|27}} Pyg, Timeon, and Shagwell torture an outlaw from the [[brotherhood without banners]] and learn that [[Sandor Clegane]] was with [[Arya Stark]], and they later hear a similar story from the innkeep at the [[crossroads inn]].{{ref|AFFC|20}}

The sellswords go to Maidenpool to find passage across the [[narrow sea]] to [[Essos]]. The docks are guarded by Lord [[Randyll Tarly]]'s men, so the fool instead entertains at the [[Stinking Goose]] and buys drinks for sailors, hoping that the three outlaws can be smuggled from [[Westeros]] on a ship.{{ref|AFFC|9}}{{ref|AFFC|14}} [[Dick Crabb]] cons Shagwell into buying a map to the [[Whispers]], which he says is a popular smugglers' cove, but Dick omits that ships have not been there for thirty years.{{ref|AFFC|14}} The sellswords camp in the ruins after they arrive.{{ref|AFFC|20}}

Brienne has been tasked by Jaime with finding [[Sansa Stark]], who has gone missing after [[Purple Wedding|the death]] of King [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey I Baratheon]]. Sansa is believed to be in the company of [[Dontos Hollard]], another fool.{{ref|AFFC|4}} Brienne learns of Dick boasting of having "fooled a fool",{{ref|AFFC|9}} and Dick later agrees to escort Brienne to the Whispers so she can find the fool in question.{{ref|AFFC|14}}

When Brienne, Dick, and [[Podrick Payne]] arrive at the Whispers, Shagwell jumps down from a [[weirwood]] and breaks Dick's knee with his morningstar. Dick begs for mercy, but Shagwell crushes his face. Shagwell and Timeon begin talking to Brienne in an attempt to distract her while they surround her. While Brienne kills Timeon and Pyg, Podrick throws stones at Shagwell until he yields. Brienne makes him dig a grave for Dick beneath the weirwood. After he finishes digging, Shagwell lunges at Brienne with a rock, but she stabs him to death with a dagger while telling him to laugh. Brienne brings the heads of the three sellswords to Maidenpool and leaves their bodies for [[crow]]s.{{ref|AFFC|20}}{{ref|AFFC|25}}
