Direwolves are based on real world canine [[w:dire wolf|dire wolf]] which went extinct some 9,500 years ago. The real-life animal's name is properly spelled as two words, "dire wolf", but the ''A Song of Ice and Fire'' series consistently spells it as one word, "direwolf".
